Scared about the weekend

18 years ago 0 249 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I saw a couple of the other threads where people have made pledges to maintain over the weekend. I didn't want to threadjack them. :) The upcoming weekend has been sort of looming out there for me. I really am scared about dealing with it. This will be my first smoke-free weekend. I live alone, I don't have a large group of friends, and the ones I *do* have all work on Saturday (As did I until just a couple months ago). So basically, I have myself to myself for the weekend. I've been trying to plan ahead for this. At this point, I don't really too much care about eating all the right stuff or anything. I'm basically in a 'Whatever the heck it takes' mode. I do have SOME good stuff (fruit, etc). I'm thinking I'll go see a movie or something tomorrow afternoon. That should kill a couple hours. However, there is still a heck of a lot of free time in there! Sunday should be more or less okay, as I'm going to force a couple of my friends to do something Sunday afternoon whether they want to or not!! :) So please send me some really, really strong thoughts during the day Saturday. I'm nervous as heck, but dammit I WILL NOT GIVE IN!! Thanks folks - B

I'm hanging in there! I caught up on some sleep this morning. I'm still waking up every few hours through the night, so I just kept going back to bed this morning until nearly noon!! Heh. However, I'm at work now. Figured I'd come in and get rid of some of the stuff that has built up over the past week since I've not been nearly as focused as normal. Figure I'll head off soon for a movie and then take things as they come! Thank you all for the support. I know you all know just how much it means to us just starting out! Bingo - I thought exactly the same thing you did - at work it's much easier not to smoke but when you are home for an extended amount of time - what to do????? Don't let the possibility of crave get in your way. Cravings come and go - this is your life, and you control it. Here's what I finally thought: Okay, I will go the the library, I will go to church. I will stay by other people at the park so I can't possibly smoke. There are so many places you cannot smoke, that this pretty much is not an issue. If you have more concerns about yourself - don't. You don't smoke anymore! If you're friends are not close at hand, call them up and talk about what you're feeling. If I craved, I got out my journal and started to write about all the reasons I quit smoking AGAIN & AGAIN & AGAIN until it passed, and like they say, IT DOES PASS. Be Strong and Hang in There! Hi Bingo - The weekends are hard - don't kid yourself...but hold close to the website - I've got a light weekend myself - not too much to do and hubby playing golf all weekend so I will be on the lookout for you. I don't have the IM but I'll check the site. So YELL For Help! Hopefully you live in a place that has nice weather this weekend and you can get outside and take a walk, borrow a friends kids to play with (you can't smoke around them), and if you don't have a dog you can borrow one of those too (and you can't smoke around them either) Go to the library and get a book that you have been wanting to read and immerse yourself in it. Look in the Things to Do section in your Friday newspaper and pick some things that sound interesting and possibly free...maybe an arts festival, etc. Stay close, drink lots of water - take a bottle with you when you go out, and choose the right thing. You know what that is! Have something ready to keep your mouth and hands occupied. Straws, toothpicks, chewing gum...that sort of thing. And when the urge to smoke hits (and it will) breath deeply and slowly. The cravings are intense, but they are VERY short lived. If you promise yourself to come here and post before you light up, you'll be doing yourself a favor as well. Hang in. It really does get better! Bingo.. What you are describing is exactly why we have the weekend promise. I use to dread the weekends in the beginning of my quit and it was so hard to keep the weekend promise. As you get farther along the weekend promise gets easier and easier to make and it gives you a good feeling. A movie is a good idea. That was something I did to kill time. Shopping, museums, read a book, pick up a new hobby, go for a walk, go to the park. Whatever it takes. While activity on these boards tend to slow down during the weekend there are still people around. If you have trouble, post away and if you don't get a response fast enough, post again. You can also read through some of the older posts here. There is a ton of useful information on these boards. Just take it five minutes at a time and believe in yourself. It isn't easy but it is doable and it gets easier as time goes by. If you haven't downloaded the SSC messenger you may want to do that as well. Several members chat there and it is also a place where you can exchanges addresses for other chat areas like MSN and Yahoo. Believe in yourself, you CAN do this! I'll be watching to see how you are doing. Hi, Bingo. The first weekend is always the hardest. Try to spend as much time in places you've never smoked, or at least spend as little time as possible in places you always smoked. A movie is a great idea. While you're there, see two! The library, museum, shopping, and church are also good suggestions. Try looking ahead by a few minutes, watching for times you would have lit up. When you see one coming (i.e. leaving the movie), expect that the mother of all craves will fall on you and prepare for it. I've found that anticipated craves are typically pretty weak, sometimes they don't even happen. Bingo, How're you doin'? I believe I spent my first weekend glued to the SSC. You've had some great advice. I'll add that finding something to do in the evening that takes both hands is helpful. It can be a new hobby or something as simple as cleaning the house. Many of us had EXTREMELY clean houses the first month of our quit. :) Not cravin', never cavin'. Hello Bingo, If You want to really want to put this smoking behind You,, You will look around and find something to replace this addiction, Myself, I took up walking, like 2 miles every morning, just take off down the road, I don't really think walking has ever killed anyone, Unless being hit by a vehicle, For my first 3 months of my quit, I beat that road, and then got on a diet plan, and this all kept me so busy, time just flew by, So give a thought, and find something that suits Your fancy, Yes, If Your gonna slip, we all kind of figure it will be on weekends, so that's why we make the promise not to smoke all weekend, It kind of holds You on a straight and narrow path, So grit those teeth, and get the eye of the tiger, and Yourself, I'm Boss from now on, Smokless In Oklahoma :)
