Today I turned 40 and quit smoking

19 years ago 0 72 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone, I turned 40 today and quit smoking. Since my ten year old daughter was about four years old whenever she got on my case about smoking, I would reply "I will quit when I am 40". I guess I figured by giving her a date she would stop hassling me. I figured that I would accomplish this somehow but since it was in the future, who cared? I decided I needed to keep my promise to my daughter and that even if this is hard-I am quitting for me too and not to forget that. Today I had a few moments of being really edgy but I dealt with it. This is going to get worse before it gets better I am sure.

Thank you everyone!!!! I didnt think anyone responded to my first post and felt all alone and then today when I was having a weak moment, I found all of your responses and had tears in my eyes. Thank you all so very much! I know I need all of you and your words of wisdom. I have exercised four times today and still feel like I am a bundle of nerves. My husband cleaned my Jeep out today so I didnt have to get into a smokey car. My mother took me to lunch and out of respect for my struggle, didnt light up herself even though she is a heavy smoker. My five year old said that since I am giving up smoking, she is going to give up lying, lol! Anyway, I plan to visit this site all the time. I wont give in. I see that all of you have worked so hard and have so much to offer a new quitter like myself. I am going cold turkey and hope that I have made the right decision. Believe it or not, I was afraid of being hooked on the patch or gum. My brother was on the patch for two years and when he finally peeled it off, he started smoking. I guess it must be in the family. My other brother has chewed nicorette gum even longer. I dont want to have nicotine in my system at all if I can help it. I dont know if I can do it, but I am going to try. Thanks again everyone. I felt so understood by your words. Happy birthday and what a wonderful present to give yourself. Keeping a promise to our children is a very important thing. It teaches them about trust and sincerity and is one of the things that we have to do as role models................so why did I spend so much time breaking promises and lying to my beautiful children. Because I was and still am a drug addict. I would make excuses and back out of promises so that I could smoke and take on board my drug fix. I was so pleased to see you say that you are not just keeping the promise but that you are stopping for yourself. That is so important because you are the only one who can make it happen. The support is fantastic here and the people are warm, genuine, sincere and generous with their time and efforts.........they try to put things into words that will help. Good luck with your quit for you and your daughter, and remember that you are a drug addict as well........so not one puff ever! CONGRATULATIONS DENISEY and Happy Birthday, too!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a wonderful thing you are doing for yourself and your daughter. I know what you mean about putting off the quit. I only wish I had been as smart as you at 40. You will do this and then when you are my age you will think back on how wonderful life has been without the cigarette smoke. Good luck to you and happy smoke-free life!!!!!
