Hey Stu - That "just one" thing gets me EVERY TIME! Even today I was sitting here thinking about having just one - and I had to pinch myself. I am staying away from all of my smoking friends b/c in the past I have bummed that just one from them and then just one more...etc.etc. It is sooo hard. I am praying for you and myself too that this is the last time we will quit! Keep me posted on your feelings and progress. Good Morning Stubow - I think it is very true - each and every one of us has a completely different quit experience. I wish I could do whatever it takes for you to flip that switch that makes a quit "work". All I can really do is share what has been helping me so far. For me, it's been keeping myself angry at the consequences. Angry and afraid, really... I guess. You may have seen my other thread where I've talked about the health problems I've had so far. Most of these are either caused by or exacerbated by my smoking. I just have to keep reminding myself how STUPID it is that I'm 36 years old and having swollen legs. I'm 36 years old - it's STUPID that I'm going to the ER with Chest Pains. Every time that craving creeps up, I just remind myself - Do I really still want to be "That Guy"??? If things are this bad when I'm 36 - how bad are the going to be when I hit 40 and still smoke?? It's STUPID that I keep feeding this addiction even though I KNOW it's bad for me. It's been helping me. Maybe it will help you, or maybe it will spur you to find something that you can focus on. You DO have the strength to do this. You really, really do. You can make it. Dear friend, it sounds like you know the 12 step program? use it the same way to quit smoking. Turn to your Higher Power becuase we are powerless over smoking, ASK for HELP!!

Thanks everyone. WEll I prayed about this last night and today. I really really really want to stop. It has only been about 8 hours since my last one. Fortunately I do have 1 small motivator to help me through at least the first few weeks. I am having a minor surgery in about 3 weeks and the Doctor told me I have to quit smoking. I am pretty sure that will give me the motivation I need for the first few weeks. I am working on getting some additional motivators in my head as well as coping mechanisms. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers PLEASE. I really shouldn't be singing. What the H E Double Hockey Stix is wrong with me? I just can't get it back on track. I am feeling very frustrated, ashamed and embarassed at this point. It is like I have no will power left for this. I want to stop smoking so bad, but anytime something sideswipes me I think "well it will just be one smoke" and then that turns into one pack. I know this is a conscious choice on my part. I just can't figure out where to pull the motivation from. I feel weak and powerless about this. I quit drinking and drugging almost 15 years ago, but this just seems impossible. The first couple of times I laid it off to too much stress. Yesterday I was hardly stressed at all and still fell off. Please don't give up on me. I really do want this to work. Don't smack me too hard, but feel free to smack away (gently). Someone send me some Mojo to get this damn thing off my back. All you have to do is block everything out, pick up that cig, light it, inhale it, until its gone. You and I are alot stronger then that. So do you want to smoke or do you not want to smoke? That is the question. I dont want you to smoke. I think you are a really cool guy. But smoking is not cool. So get back on the bike and be free. Its your life, it is not nic life. Next time block out the urge to smoke and ride like the wind. You add alot of inspriration to this site, so what is it going to be smoke or ride for your life? There is no such thing as just one. Before this quit I couldn't make it more than a few hours before I would give in and give up. Not One Puff Ever really helped me this time. I realized that I could not take that first puff. As long as I didn't light that first cigarette I was fine. Don't light that next cigarette. Do it for five minutes at a time. Then another and another. Do not be ashamed or embarassed. This is a horrible addiction and it has controlled each and every one of us. You are by far not alone. Get back in there and fight for your life. Get rid of all cigarettes, and don't light the next cigarette.
