Rebuilding your Self-Esteem

Pete, look for subtle things my mom I think I referred to in another post was rather stoic, never showed her emotions - one way to keep me from crying when I was a little girl was to tell me "pretty girls don't cry".  That effected me until recently.  Pretty girls do cry and though I might not be the belle of the ball I was created this way so I can't be all that bad looking.

Dad used to tell me "if you keep eating like that, you'll grow up to look like your mother".  My mother was overweight.  Hmmm, you can figure that one out.

After quit working on my doctoral degree, I went to tell my 92 year old grandmother.  Remember, I have a son who I put through law school, a very good, high paying job with the government, a car to drive from them, own my own nice home, etc.  And she said "I just wish you'd made something of yourself".  As I respect my grandmother, I calmly said "I have".  But that had a very negative effect on me.

It's not the obvious sometimes, so look deep.  Little snippets of conversations are where I find them.  I write down what the snippets were - so I can challenge them.  There are lots more I've yet to uncover for me.  I think you'll find it useful.

I'm a lazy daisy and don't usually bother following these kinds of thread. But my self-esteem sure does need a booster, and how!

I'll make a list as you suggest, though I have a feeling my low self-esteem is all my own work, and there are no other obvious candidates yet. But if I write stuff down something may emerge, which I suppose is the point of the exercise.

Inspired by Goofy, I shall have a go at participating.

Members,

Has an illness, addiction or other left your self-esteem in the gutter? In the weeks to come, we will be exploring various strategies to help rebuild your self-esteem:

What is self-esteem?

The level of self-esteem you have is gained via reactions important people have had to you throughout your life. Starting off with your parents, it is further shaped by your siblings, superiors, friends and significant others. One primary factor in the development of self-esteem involved the positive or negative reinforcement or messages you receive from these people.

Before we can begin rebuilding, we encourage you to take make a list of the people in your life who have played an important role in your life. Were they supportive or negative forces in your life? What did they do for your self-esteem?
