Hi JayDee!  Thanks for such a nice post.  In a nutshell, how I got cured was taking this program, doing the homework and getting help from the Health Educator's and everyone on this site.  I replaced every negative thought with a positive true statement.  And, I never gave up!  It was a struggle for awhile, but eventually it got better and better and it doesn't interfere with my life anymore.  I still deal with anxiety, like everyone does, but it doesn't effect me like it used to.  Now, I'm going to say something that is my honest opinion and this is to everyone on this site. Don't let anyone tell you that you will have it forever.  How do "they" know?  I was told the same thing and I think if I believed what I was told, I would still have it.  No one has the right to take away anyone's hope about being cured.  Anything is possible and I truly believe it.  Because, I lived it.  How is it possible that I couldn't get in the shower and couldn't drive 5 minutes down the street without full blow panic attacks to now being able to fly around the world by myself.  I believed and I had hope.  I know I'm not supposed to say it, but I also believe in God.  I had such self-imposed limitations and made fear based decisions for half of my life.  I was a prisoner, but I didn't realize I had the key all along and I could let myself out!  Anything is possible!  It's my opinion and it's what happened to me, so why couldn't it happen for everyone else?  I believe enough for everyone on this site.  Have hope and believe and never give up and see what happens.

Your post is so upbeat and positive. Congratulations on your success. How did you get cured from panic disorder? I want to be cured from this but have been told I will have it forever, but can manage it with CBT and medications, then CBT alone.
 
Have you ever considered helping or inspiring others with a panic disorder and/or agoraphobia? You'd be such a great help to all of us in the other sections on this site.

I LOVED Spanish class!!!  Despite having to read a paragraph in Spanish out loud :-)  For a moment before reading, I felt like I was in 8th grade and I had high anxiety, but I just did it anyway and the Teacher said, "Muy bien!" (Very good!).  At one point there was a pop quiz and I had to make up a sentence that described something in the picture.  I had to go first!  High anxiety moment part 2 - ha ha.  So, I just did the best I could and I told the teacher I knew I left one word out and she told me what it was and she said, "Muy bien!" again!  So, despite being in temporary anxiety mode, twice, nothing bad happened.  The world didn't end, no one laughed, everyone was supportive, and now I'm less self-conscious.  And, next time I'll have less anxiety and if I don't, I'll be able to get through it anyway.  So, I'm very happy I went and I'm looking forward to going to the classes twice a month.  We're singing a vowel song next time.  I sing like an injured Moose, so no anxiety there - ha ha.  But, hey, I'm going to go and sing anyway.  What's the worst that can happen?  Nothing :-)  I'm continuing to build confidence speaking Espanol.

P.S.  And, one day, you won't always be doing it afraid.  With time, the fear will be less and less or disappear altogether.  And, you'll have the confidence and experience to know that you can manage it and handle it, when anxiety rear's its ugly head from time to time.

Hi Cara!

The biggest mistake I made was believing that a setback meant that I had to start all over again from square one. I assumed that all of the hard work and progress I made was for nothing.  NOT TRUE!!!  Everyone has setbacks and the main thing is to not focus on the setback.  Distract yourself so your thoughts don't drag you down the tubes.  I used to call them "push through's" instead of setbacks.  The faster you let it go and move on, the quicker you recover.  Just engage in some kind of activity like reading a book, listening and singing to music, do a circle word puzzle, turn on the TV.  Anything, to break your negative train of thought.  Once you're into your distraction, after a few minutes, the setback (push through) has less importance, because you're not focusing on it.  Whatever you focus on is what you're going to get more of, it's just the way it works.  

I still have a push through, here and there.  There was an elevator at the doctor's office that I avoided going on.  So, I called the receptionist and asked if she could unlock the stair well.  To my surprise, she came down on the elevator and made me get on it with her - ha ha ha!  I just thought it was funny and now, I just get on the elevator.  Also, at night sometimes I'll feel anxious for no particular reason.  Maybe I had a cup of coffee too late in the day or I had a piece of chocolate for dessert after dinner.  My heart will beat faster and I'm aware of my physical triggers, so I'll just tell myself, "Oh well, I'll get over it soon."  And, now, I can just roll over and go to sleep.  

Even people without panic disorder feel anxious and fearful at times, we're all human beings and it's normal!   It's about not letting it interfere with what you want to do.  And, working toward that goal until we can do it afraid anyway.

You're doing great Cara!  Keep up the great work!  Don't get discouraged and be kind to yourself!

I was severly anemic also when this panic attacks happened. I think it is somewhat linked.
 
But I've been better with some dreadful feelings and feeling anxious. My main probelm is when I get these setbacks I dwell on them for a while and think its worse then before...
 
Do you still have these setbacks and how do you deal with them?

Hi Mark, I am so happy to hear this! I danced around my living room.  You've got it Mark!  The more positive experiences you have make you stronger.  And, fear will become less and less over time.  You are living proof that this works!  I am so proud of you.  You are brave and strong and will continue to be.  This a a big step and I share in your happiness.  Great job!  I look forward to hearing more posts from you.  Continue to have a great week filled with many good things.  I will go to Spanish class this evening and Wednesday to teach English class.  Even if no one shows up, I will enjoy spending time with me.  I've contacted the computer group with no response.  I am not discouraged. Because, happiness is within me.  And, if no one shows up, I will start my own group and see if people will come to it. I continue to look for new experiences, to try new things, and to meet new people.  Life is interesting and I am enjoying my life.  Now I will go to a spa for Chinese acupressure and massage and relax and think happy thoughts.

Hi Shari, I waited a while to answer in order to share evidence that the recommendations of the Forum are imported. Yesterday I had the usual fear to come out (automatic thoughts) that I contrasted with positive thoughts then I went to church and approached a person who has asked me to read the Gospel on stage. He asked me to put myself in the front row! While this happened to me, I thought that you were playing the drum and danced, what you said avoiding lost so many interesting things. I spent an hour very nice then after the people of the church have told me that my reading was very nice. 
Now I was alone at home and I felt more comfortable with the positive thoughts that I've written. I'm happy! 
Have a good week full of beautiful things and happy. I hope everyone can read this to understand the importance of the exercises on the thoughts and exercised on exposure. Little by little, the largest and most important things are built in small steps.
