Effexor - bad taste in mouth?

Hi, I too have been on effexor for about 2 months now, after being on mirtazapine for a year. I haven't noticed a bad taste, but my sleep has gone to pot. I can easily go 48 hours without sleeping. Do you have the same problem ?

effexer???

Hi I started on effexor a couple of months ago as mirtazapine that I'd been on for a year just suddenly stoped working. Once I'd gotten over the side effects, which were difficult at first, have found it is working okay. The only problem I've found is that compared to mirtazapine which aided sleep especially at a lower dose effexor has made sleeping a bit of a problem for me, so try to get myself relatively tired during the day. But yes, I don't feel so down anymore and my anxiety has been fairly minimal too, so thats great ! Good luck, and remember to give it a chance !

started to get panic attacks/I get dizziness upon getting out of bed/ unbalanced when walking

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you're having dizzy spells. I too have them sometimes, especially on waking so always keep a drink by the side of my bed, some flat diet coke seems to do the trick. Low blood sugar levels can cause this. I always find I get dizzy when I allow myself to get more tired than I should. Its not nice, but does go fairly quickly. I think its fairly common for people without anxiety too, so try not to worry about it too much, but you could try a sugar drink, or a sweet biscuit, or have your blood sugar levels checked. The only problem with this is that by the time you've ate and gone to the doctors its probably going to be fine ! Hang in there !

Help please... major decision

Hi, reading your letter was like deja vu. I was in exactly the same situation as yourself, although my financial commitment to my mum wasn't so dire. My mum was schizophrenic, and I loved her more than life itself, although when she didn't take her medication it was difficult to feel anything apart from stress and anger. It really does exhaust you ! I don't think you have any option but to have her hospitalised for a while so that she can be stabilised. It won't be forever, and its what she needs too right now, although she may not think so. Without it, she will be a danger to herself and others. she needs the help, and you need the space. There is absolutely nothing for you to feel guilty about, you would just be doing the right thing for her. You can't help her on your own, its a horrible illness, and she needs to take her medication. you won't be able to help her if you're feeling frazzled, and you can't help her get better anyway apart from letting her go into hospital and get the help she needs. Its difficult I know, but please for the sake of both / all of you, think that it is the right thing to do, and that you're doing it out of love for her. Good luck, I hope you both find the peace you need.

venlafaxine/ anxiety ?

Hi, I haven't posted for some time, as I've been feeling quite well since changing my meds from mirtazapine to venlafaxine, anxiety has been low and those awful butterflies in my tummy that I was so scared of disappeared. Now tho' I find that if I get tired I get this lump in my throat that makes it difficult to swallow, does anyone else have the same ? I read Claire Weeks book ages ago that said the anxiety symtoms wouldn't change, i.e if ou had a tight chest, the you wouldn't develop and other symtoms, and believed this to be true, as my anxiety was always a stomach thing, so is this new 'feeling' an anxiety thing ? Have been on venlafaxine since the spring, and feel that it has helped, is there anybody out there who has used this before, long term ? My doctor also wants me to come off HRT, an dthis frightens me as I haven't had a major attack since being off it, are there any alternatives ? Sorry to ask so much, but can't think of anyone else to ask !

Hypnosis

Hi there, yes I tried hypnosis at a time when I was looking for that @miracle cure' ! It seems anyone can indeed be hypnotised ( I wasn't sure that I could be ).My expectations were too high I think, but it did help me learn more about how to relax, unwind. Make sure its a reputable hynotherapist, don't have huge hopes like I did for a cure, but use it as one of the many tools that we can use. Its a growing discipline, so try it !!!! Good luck

QUESTION FOR GIRLS

there has been loads of messages about this subject in the past ( you may have to go back to ones from last year ), and it would seem to be quite common for anxiety to be linked with changes in hormone levels, period times or menopause are the most common. I've read loads about it in relation to the menopause and papers seem to suggest a direct link between the two. I'm now on HRT and have almost been panic free since I first starting taking it. See if you can find the previous messages, or just put panic / hormone into google and see what it comes up with. Good luck ! I found it a fascinating subject to research !!

Panic is back.

I can so relate to this. I had eight months off from work when I first starting having panic attacks, and my boss decided to put me on light duties, I was so bored !! And of course that gave me time to think, and mull over, and just get extremely anxious because I had nothing to do. So I went looking for work ! Volunteered to help anyone, with anything ! Just to keep my mind busy, and eventually I began to have days when I was less anxious, and then days when I wasn't anxious at all. It took some time, but occupation definately helps. Yes there may be another reason why you feel anxious, but I don't always agree that you have to go looking for answers, just stay busy, but balance that with rest, and time for you, no-one else, and maybe you could use THIS time to analyse why you feel the way you do. Its not something you have to do all the time. Inactivity makes you think about your problems, be it panic or anything else, thats normal ! I just know you'll do fine, believe in yourself, you're worth it !! Good luck

Wondering if it is truly possible to be free of this

what a brilliant question. how can you go forward if you don't know where you're standing ? Time, I think is the answer to this one. It really is possible to be free of 'this', but if you had told me that three years ago, I would have thought you were as mad as I felt ! Its hard work, lots of difficult questions to ask yourself, and really a whole new change of lifestyle, but believe me, if I can do it, so can you. Be kind to youself is my maxim now, learn to say no sometimes, take that medication if it helps, face your fears gradually, find that information ( there's lots on this site ), don't give yourself deadlines (I will be on meds for..., I will be better by... ), but it will happen I promise you, you can really, really be free of this. Good luck on your path
