New Here!!!

Hello: My name is Elaine and i live in Minneapolis, Mn USA. I have suffered from panic attacks since 92. I have now been off all meds over 2 years got tired of taking themTextTextTextTextText. It seems that my attacks may be coming back. I had one last week when I was walking my 7 year old to the library. It was a really intense one that lasted maybe 1 hour. . I did have one a few months ago in a car with a friend of mine going over to their house. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about how to deal with these that just come form no where. I do have a son who has had 28 brain surgeries and this has been a source of stress for me and my family for 12 years. Thank You Elaine

HELLO THERE

TextTextTextTextText Hello All: My name is Elaine and Ihave suffered from panic attacks since 92. I had my first one when I was sufferering from a bladder infection and just about to make a move to a new home. our son Travis who is now 12 was born 2 years earlier with some medical problems , contracted Meningitis and then developed Hydrocephalus,(water on the brain). He had had 28 surgeries due to the shunt he had place to remove all the fluid that builds up. he does have some behavioral challenges that we are dealing with. I do live under a moderate deal of stress all the time. He could get very ill very suddenly so I am sort of on guard most of the time. i stopped all meds for my panic over 2 years ago. I have3 been doing really good. I did have my first panic attack in over 4 years last week when I was walking with my daughter to the library. It was a real intense one that kind of came in waves for almost an hour and then just went away. Could it just be an isolated occurance or should I be prepared for others. What I was surprised about is that I had no panic attacks on Sept 11 or even a while after??? I do have a great difficulty sleeping though sort of chronic insomnia. I just wanted to say hi and say that I am glad i found this group and site. I now know I am not alone. elaine

Oh Happy Day!

Wow, that is so great. I just joined this group last week and have already learned so much from everyone here. Beth. I have not had a panic attack in over two years until a few weeks ago. I have also been off meds for over two years. I do not know what made them go away for that long but I am now begining to think that the panic attack was related to some famly stress that went on the night before. Keep up the great job Beth. Help on mastering my fear of another panic attack

Took an hour for it to go. Did some self talking and trying to concentrate on what I was looking for in the library. Now I am trying to deal with the fear of having another attack. I have not had another attack of that magnatude but minor anxiety over having another one. Does any one have any suggestions that I could use? thanks so much for this place where I feel so safe and have learned so much already. TextTextText

How to explain this to my 7 year old??

As I have written before, I had an isolated panic attack a few weeks ago when I was taking my 7 year old daughter to the library. When I was having the attack she could tell something was wrong and she looked scared. I kept telling her I was alright that mommy got scared but it was not anything that she had to worry about. Does any one have any suggestions aobut how to explain to a child her age and what shoudl I do if I have an attack when I am alone with her again. I am not scared about it happening again with her but just would like to have some ideas of what to do so she does not become scared herself.

How to explain this to my 7 year old??

Thank You-Thank You -Thank You. Anne-Marie, Janice and Beth. Your suggestions were absolutely wonderful ones. I did talk to her today and she just hugged me and said. Mommy, I Love You! I cried. She is my youngest of 4 children. My 3 oldest were around when I had them in the beginning and they did the some of the things that Anne Marie suggested.I have not had an attack in a long time for me that I kinda forgot some of my coping stuff. Today I had an anxious feeling day that is unusual for me. I really think that I am feeling some anxiety about Sept 11. I know it has been a year and I knew no one who was personally touched by this tragedy, but I saw what happened on the TV and I did have some nightmares and some anxiety for about a week after that but things did go back to my "normal". Is any one else who may be feeling this sort of dread about Sept 11. I cannot watch any of the stuff they have had on TV in the past few weeks, before that I watched it and no anxious reactions like I have now. No panic but that sinking gut feeling and some other minor stuff that I now means I am anxious, but htis is way off the topic LOL. Again thank You 3 for your help in this matter. I will let you know how things go. Bless you all, Elaine

Is anyone else feeling some anxiety over the Sept `11 anniversary????

Hello All: I am noticing that i am avioding stuff that relates to Sept 11. I used to be able to watch allthe stuff they had been showing , buit when I tried to watch a program about the plane that went down in Penn. I noticed my anxiety went way high. I did not have a panic attack but I felt really uncomfortable about it and did not warch it. I did not know anyone who was personally affected but could watching all that stuff and having it shown all that time be finally getting to me. Also when ever I hear a breaking News story on the TV I jsut about freak I am not kidding. Also we live in the path of our airport.Planes go over us all the time, but I seem so sensitive to it lately. I look up and see them and get really afraid. May be I am just putting this together all wrong. I have no therapist and no insurance since my hubby has been out of work since Jan but I have not seen or needed meds of a therapist for quite a while. Should I avoid all this Sept 11 stuff all together???I know no one here is a therapist just some opinions please Thanks Elaine

Help with Paxil

Hey Luke: Hope you are still doing good on your meds. When I took meds the first one I started on was Xanax and did use it for a while then I became pregnant with our fourth child so I was weaned off it. No problems. when my panic attacks started again 2 years later. I was put on Paxil which I could not tolerate and Klonopin. I took .5 mg 3 times a day. It worked wonders. It is longer acting than xanax and you need to slowly taper off it no just stopping it the withdrawl can be uncomfortable. So take your time and you may have to try different meds to find the right one or the right combo. Good luck, Luke I am thinking about you. Elaine
