3,000 days ago

I am new to this site.  Prior to this site I signed up with two other site.  After a few days I realize they were ineffective.  This site however...freaking 3017 days, 90,510 cigarettes avoided, then to go as far as estimating how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds, in your case 500+ days and counting saved from death since putting down the smokes.  This is genius!

Congratulation on your accomplishment...going through these threads and reading story like yours truly motivates me, reinforces me being smoke free, and will make me think twice before I pick up another cigarette!

A couple of thoughts

I am only 1 month into my quit.  For the first two weeks never did it cross my mind to join a forum.  It was only when I goggled "Quit Smoking" did I run into a forum.  The first forum I ran into I went through a few threads and joined because I found it amusing.  I then realize after a few days after this girl started bashing me for some things I wrote on the forum, that I knew I had to immediately quit going on there.   Granted a couple of my post were off the wall, but at the time my mind was a little foggy, I think when I first stop without knowing it actually made my mind go crazy.  Anyway, I searched and found another site.  Again I joined.  I do not want to get into it too much but I had written a thread on my thoughts about Allen Carr's book.  I found a few loop holes in his story, however this is not the issue and I will not get into it.  Anyway, a member of that site who had been with that site since 2008 got banned for a humorous quote he made after I created the thread.  Another member questioned why he got banned, then got a little upset and I guess went off and wrote something.  She then got banned too.  These members were assets to this forum.  I went through many thread and they were very encouraging with their responses.

Anyway, I just didn't approve on how these people got banned.  I think sometimes a little humor on a site is necessary.  Not everyone has to agree on everything.  What someone finds amusing might not amuse someone else, but there will be people that come across it and some will think its funny.  I feel if that's what it takes and keeps people from smoking then let it be!

Anyway, I just joined this site yesterday evening.  All I can say is before I found this site I already made up my mind I was going to quit or to say.  The reality is this is my first time trying to stop smoking.  Even with the mindset and the drive that got me to stop I have to admit.  This isn't as easy as I thought.  I like to see myself as strong and having a lot of willpower, but there has been days since I stopped and been smoke free that I think about smoking.  Although I have no intentions to pick on up and smoke it is in my mind.  That to me is scary!

So far this site has impressed me.  The stories I am reading, the numbers I am seeing is amazing me.  I already know this is where I will be going for support. I really don't consider myself quit just yet. I consider myself an infant after reading the stories on here.  I will be around and logging on this site daily for years to come! I wrote a topic called "Survival" but now I realize I shouldn't be giving anyone any advice, because if you are talking the sheer amount of days smoke free.  There are people on here that make me look silly!

I don't think this site is too well known.  If you goggle "Quit smoking forums"  This site doesn't even pop up.  It was by sheer luck that I came across and pressed the right button. Being difficult to find I would imagine that takes a hit on how many people join the site which could be contributing to lack of involvement maybe?

This site compared to what I have seen out there is Legendary!

What is your driving force?

Hi,
I have nothing else better to do so I want to share a story....

I have a friend who has a younger sister.  I really don't talk to her much other then the occasional greeting hi and bye when I see her.  Anyhow, she smokes heavily and is an alcoholic.  Literally you will never catch her not smoking or drinking.  When I talk to my friend I will always as how his family is doing, and how she is doing.  He always sighs then giggles and tells me the same thing.  "She the same!"  He tells me stories about her and from what I hear the length she will go to fund her addictions is something else.  So to get to the bulk of this story. One would think a person that smokes and drinks as much as her and what she is willing to do to get money to fund her addiction nothing could get her to stop smoking or drinking.... Wrong!!!  I never had much respect for this girl but now I have much respect and admiration!

She is 1 or 2 years younger then me.  Never in my life did I think anything in this world could get her to stop smoking and drinking for any substantial amount of time. I until recently never thought how truly amazing this girl is until recently.  She herself, her husband, her brother, and her family will never know how amazing she is.  Anyway, she gave birth to two healthy sons.  I realized that nothing could get her to put down the cigs and alcohol, but as I look back I am wrong.  The second she knew she was pregnant with her first son she quit immediately.  As I recall never once did she pick up a smoke or even took a sip of alcohol.  She never even talked about it.  She just straight up quit cold turkey for nine months until her kid was born.  There was no questions asked, no excuses, its like the switch was just turned off. She then did it again when she found out she was pregnant with her second son.  I think about it now and it is truly, truly is amazing that nothing in the world could get her to stop, but when it came down it she stopped on two occasions twice for the health of her sons.  Not just once but twice!  Most amazingly if all she unconsciously stopped, never complained, and never mentioned smoking or drinking.  All I can recall is during her pregnancy, she was very emotional.  Every time I came to her house to hang out with my friend all she did was cry and freak out about weird, off the wall, and irrelevant things.

In my teens when I worked at hospital I was smoking at a smoking area where I randomly had a conversation with a girl I didn't know.  I can't remember if she worked at the hospital or if she was there for a Dr's appointment.  I was shocked when she told me she was pregnant, and was sucking on a cigarette.

Anyway, of course after my friends younger sister had her sons she always smoked and drank again, and today she is back to her old ways.  I guess   I'm just wondering other then me if she herself, her husband,or anyone around her ever took the time out to think just how truly amazing she is to have stopped smoking and drinking on two occasions cold turkey for 9 months. She did it unconsciously, never talked about it, and never complained. Her ability to turn off the switch is simply amazing!

I guess even a person who you think could never stop smoking or drinking and even go through extreme measures to fund their for any significant amount of time does indeed have a driving force within them to stop!

This is all I have to share...

A couple of thoughts

Hello Working On it,

Let me give you a little background on me.  I have no educational background other then a Medical Assisting certification I got after a 9 month course I did in 1998.  I am not the most educated in the world.  However, when it comes to mattresses, selling them, and building a mattress business from the ground up...Lets just say I am a freaking pro!  As with all business to be successful is the method you use to drive people through the door.  Advertising is the key and wording is the key.  As I mentioned when I goggled "Stop Smoking" or "Stop Smoking Forum"  This site was no where to be found.  You mentioned this is much more then a forum.  I agree, it is much, much more then a forum.  It is a quit smoking educational health site which also branches off and has other site  education  on other subjects (quit alcohol, fitness, etc).

Sadly however even though this site isn't just a forum, if a person wants to stop smoking and looking for a support site. They are most likely going to include the word "forum" in their search.  Although "Quit Smoking" is part of this sites name the vast numbers of sites out there that start with those two word is vast which al together buries this site among millions of other sites that show up on goggle.  No one is going to think "center"

I will end this here as I am a professional advertising specialist, I am just giving my two-sense!

A couple of thoughts

Now you got me thinking

I hopped onto goggle and goggled the possible phrases people would use to see if this site would pop up.  The only way two phrases I found that this site would pop up is if I typed this sites name specifically the way it is "Stop Smoking Center".  It is the first site on the list.  The only other phrase is "Stop smoking forum" Although it shows up this site is the very last site on the page.

That being said if you do not type in specifically "Stop Smoking Center"  this site would not show as a top three site.

People start from the top down.  Like me I started with the first site and clicked. I would assume most people like me would probally join the first site once they already clicked and went into that site. I am glad I am part of this forum, but it took many searches and a lot of effort to find it.  It's like the phrase "First come serve".  The first on the list gets the first chance to hook people into their site.

When I sold mattresses it was never about price.  The guy next door can sell the same exact mattress for $200 less, but if he can't get people through the door it doesn't matter.

Also, depending on the person one person can think of it as "quit smoking" or "stop smoking" for me it was "quit smoking"  I never used "stop smoking"  I hope this all makes sense.

As you can tell I am compulsive.  Once you get me thinking about something I can't let it go

A couple of thoughts

I want to add one more thing and I will shut up.  As I mention if someone is looking for online support they are going to use forum as part of their search.  The chance of them using "center" is slim to none. Then you factor in whether they use the words "Quit smoking" or "Stop Smoking".  So all in all the two most phrases used are " Quit smoking forum"  or "Stop Smoking forum"  If they use "quit smoking this site is never found.  If they use "Stop Smoking" this forum is the last on the page.  That being said this site pretty much get no traffic flow at all!  Period!  Even though it show up using " Stop Smoking Forum" there are 20 sites before it so that means 20 sites people will click on before this site even has a chance.  Not to mention it doesn't show up at all if you use "Quit Smoking"  Then to factor in the chance of a person typing this site's name in word for word.  Not a chance!

Another Year Passes

Hi ,

Congratz once again!  I am glad I am here, found this site, and able to read all these amazing success stories!

Lets get into Goggle.  As per wikipedia goggle "The domain name for Google was registered on September 15, 1997". So if you are talking 1997 to 2004 goggle realistically was in it's infant stage.  This site was up and running in year 2000. It makes total sense that this site if you goggle "Stop Smoking"  would show up closer to the top of the list rather then end of the list in the year 2004 . 2000(when this site was up) to 2004 that's only 4 years. There were less numbers of sites out there that started with the name "Stop Smoking" in 2004.  That was nearly a decade ago.  If you are talking shear numbers of sites that have been created that start with "Stop Smoking"  we are talking tens of thousands, possibly into the hundred of thousands from 2004 to 2013.  Also goggle is a search engine that takes into account how many users actually click a site.  So that being said the more a user clicks on a domain name the closer you are towards the top of the list.  The main thing is the name of the site.  When a person goes on to goggle they are going to be specific.  Say a person wants to find information on a Golden Retriever. We all know a Golden Retriever is a dog. Simply pressing in Dog isn't going to bring up information on a Golden Retriever. It might be the tenth link on the page, the hundredth, or more if you are simply pressing in dog.

So lets get to the words "Stop Smoking"  its 2013 almost 10 years from 2004.   A lot has happen and many site have been created that starts with "Stop Smoking"  Today you have to be more specific in your search.

Lets get down to business...

Here are threes choices if you were going to search for a stop smoking support site...tell me which on you would come to mind first....

A.  Stop Smoking Center
B.  Stop Smoking Forum
C. Quit Smoking Forum

The word center to me is a place that you would physically go to.  The word forum to me means a place online open for discussion.

All I am saying is if you did a survey and asked 100 people to finish two phrases if you they were looking for a stop smoking online support site....

Quit smoking________.    Stop smoking_________.

What is the is number of people would use "Center" vs "Forum"

I love working with numbers.  If you are talking about the difference of how many people come across this site using goggle per day.  From a business point of view if you adding the word forum to the name of the site that makes a huge difference.  I am talking about major numbers.  You are talking about maybe going from 50 people coming across this site weekly to possibly hundred and thousands.  Say this site's name was "Stop Smoking Center and Forum"  Just having the word forum in it propels the site up the list.  Even if the site went from the 20th on the list to 19th on the list you give yourself a better chance at a member.

I hope this all makes sense.
