Hey Josh! You can call it coddling or whatever you like, but somedays when you feel like your life is in the toilet and you come on here and ask for help, and some kind hearted soul lifts you up out of the dirt, it feels like a million dollars! It has happened to many of us, some of us more than once. Quitting smoking is not just a one time occurance, it is a journey! You may need a hand someday, don't be afraid to come in here and ask for a hand, and when you do, some kind hearted soul will lift you up and put you back up again! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 244 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,100 Amount Saved: $2,574.20 Life Gained: Days: 29 Hrs: 20 Mins: 40 Seconds: 59

Josh -- You're further along that I am and however you've been able to do it, I applaud you. I'm not the most touchy-feely person in the world, but I do see a difference between "encouragement" and "coddling". And if it was super-easy to go it alone and quit, this site wouldn't exist and none of us would have ever felt the need to seek out the knowledge and experience of other quitters. And I couldn't disagree with you more about rewards. The reward of just not smoking isn't enough or most of us would have quit smoking long ago. I had long been using cigarettes as a "reward" -- I've worked hard on something, it's time to take a break and have a smoke; If I have a conflict with someone, I'd have a smoke -- all in an effort to feel better because I "deserved" it. With the seeming-deprivation of not smoking, rewards have been important to me. Nothing big, but a small moment of recognition of the positive steps I'm making to deal with my life. Yeah Josh. What they said! I've tried to quit before - even lasted for a few months a couple of times but it was like pushing poo uphill with a toothpick, hard work! This time, it's all been pretty zen ... six weeks in and I am a well of calmness (it's true, ask my husband LOL). Maybe it's just the right "time" for me, as it may have been for you. Some people need a bit of motivation, a cyber cuddle so to speak ... that's fine, I will be a cuddler as one day I might need to be a cuddlee. Were you hugged as a child? A hug, even a cyber one, is really nice. Hey Josh! Everybody needs different things. All I know for me is that "in real life"- my job, my friends- I am the strong one, the tough fighter. I would never- or cannot- let anybody see my insecurity and stress. I smile, joke and bear it. So it is just SUCH a relief to be able to complain a bit, here, virtually, and be coddled. A shrink might even say that we are being weaned off sucking- so we need coddling, cuddling and love. Though that's putting it realy simply.:p Stay strong, though. Congrats!! Josh, Just as other members have said, to each his own. I'm happy to hear you've been successful in your quit. Kudos to you on a job well done! Unfortunately, some struggle, some need support or guidance through uncharted territory, some just want to be able to find and talk to others who have the same lived experience. This site gives them that resource. It's not for everyone but we would ask you to respect that each quitter is unique and therefore has their own set of needs. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

You're not wrong, Josh. Whatever works for you is right for you. I am neither a coddler nor a coddlee but some quitters semm to need that & others seem to need to give it. Good for them, if it works. I had a relatively easy quit, I guess, compared to some, but I used the patch & stuck to the whole program. I also found rewarding myself helped my focus. Others, like you, have found cold turkey is best. Whatever you choose, however you go about it, the important thing is to get it done. Hey wazz, No one acknowledged this is your 1st day. Way to go! Listen, I've smoked for 35 years, the last 5 were 2 packs a day. I think it's great that Josh was able to make an easy quit. The fact is, if I hadn't found this site, I'd probably still be smoking. The people here know what to say, and how to relate to each person's quit. Today is my first full week, and I am eternally grateful to the people here. Hey Josh, Good on you for almost 2 Months smoke free. The benefits of quitting young are huge too - I quit at 29. I'm not posting to prove you wrong and I'm glad that you were able to quit the way you did but everybody is different. There are other sites that will kick you off for using nicotine in any form. That works for some people. I am an over-thinker and so I wanted to plan my quit and find out about what to expect and what to prepare for. I didn't do that in my previous quit and it was a disaster. By just telling myself "no" every time I wanted a cigarette I felt like I was being deprived or punished. It only lasted 9 days. This quit I did some research, got myself excited and now over three years have passed. We all learn differently and we all respond to different things and thank God for that. Also, a lot of people only hear how hard it is to quit, how the odds are against them and for a lot of people - they just need to see it CAN be done and that it doesn't have to suck. That might seem like coddling but it is also encouraging. Oh, the last thing has to do with longevity and staying power. The quit program here and learning from other people teaches you how to deal with things in new ways rather than reverting to smoking. In the beginning the issues are more physical but as you go, you discover how much smoking was a crutch. When things in your life get rough the crutch comes a calling if you haven't found other ways of coping with things. I'm glad you've quit and I'm glad you're lovin it! The freedom is amazing isn't it? All the best :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1186 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 23,720 Amount Saved: $5,337.00 Life Gained: Days: 90 Hrs: 13 Mins: 16 Seconds: 6

Josh, I think it's great that your quit was so easy. I don't think you are wrong nor do I feel the need to prove anything. What you have said has been said by many. But not every quit is the same. That's the value of this site: we can accommodate everyone's needs with charity and consideration. Maybe some people need an excuse to stop or need to be coddled. If quitting for you was so easy than why use the patch? But if it was so easy congrads on that. For others it takes more than will power. Have you ever entered a competition? Have you trained for that competition and had someone there to push you through the hard spots, 1 more mile, 1 more rep. Well thats what alot of people here need. Sure will power is good but its not always enough. If will power was all we needed to rely on there'd be no sinners or sins.
