Improving Time Management Skills, II

10 years ago 0 4027 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Matt,
As I was
recovering from some ailment, I wondered if time management is about time or
resource managemtn?  I was forced to slow down, so I have this list of
things "to do" when I'm not well, like renew meds and other mundane
things which require little energy?

The big
city requires being engaged with some machine that just speeds me up, and I
don't wish to be part of that, since I miss being aware or "mindful"
to use the buzzword.  At a popular tourist site, I  noticed people
intentionally walking slowly, trying to change their pace.

When I
returned from my outing, I went into a shopping mall, and was irritated by
pedestrians walking aimlessly, away from the articulated walkways provided at
malls, painted in yellow as I began to pick up my pace, returning to the frenzy
of the city.

If I know
my goals, and pace myself so I can be present to others, I believe time
management has to do with resource management, but in addition, it is at my
pace. Pace is as important as what I do, since the ability to choose my pace,
allows me to savour life, as opposed to watching it speed past me looking like
a blur instead of a symphony of senses.

As for delegating, I don’t have anyone to
delegate to, unless I pay someone, so that’s the price of getting help, and
it’s expensive in the big city. I
overcomplicate things, and it becomes difficult since I have to a) grasp the
process cognitively with the “noise” of the conditions we all suffer from on
this site and b) interact with people
again overcoming the social challenges of this forum’s struggles

In the end, being present to others may matter more than
my resume or achievements, since the material world is just cosmetic, temporary
and fleeting.   It’s funny to come to
conclusion so late in life, since I tried to hard to get so much done, when all
I had to do was breathe, smell, listen, look and taste.

Members,

In the past week, we’ve been talking about stress management. A great preventative strategy for stress is to buff up on your time management skills. Here are a few tips:

  •  Learn to delegate: You are a busy person, you can’t take care of every detail. Look at the people around you. Who could help share the load?
  •  Prepare: Take some time at the end of the day to plan your next working day. This will help keep the office at the office and when you go to bed, you won’t toss & turn worrying about your next working day.
  • Take your breaks: You are much more effective if you mind & body has small periods of rest in between draining tasks.
  • Judge well: Learn to judge the difference between urgent & important tasks. Often times we are interrupted by people or projects which seem urgent but in actual fact could be prioritized to a later time or the next working day.

We now invite our members to share their time management tips & tricks! Do you find it difficult to prioritize?
