Hi PTO

I echo what Sunny said about makin a presentation as I had to address the entire group of members from a non for profit mental agency. The one thing to add to Sunny posts that nay help you is to think that the people listening want you to do a good job as much as you want to. I other words they are not looking for your failure they are not against you when you present your presentation. Do not try to be perfect and the anxiety will melt away its the perception of what if I blunder and what will the people think of me if I do.  They will think if I had to do it I would not make a perfect presentation either. Lower you expectation and your performance will rise.

Hi PTO:  Welcome to the site.  I don't know if this will help or not, but when I have to make presentations every now and then I try to remember it is not about me, it is only the information that they want.  So I focus on the info. and deliver it to them, which is what they are looking for.   I am not the most important thing and that releases some of the pressure/stress - takes the focus of my performance, the focus is on the information.

PTO  - I am new here, too.  I am not currently experiencing what you are experiencing, but when I was going through fertility issues and had to have internal exams (which I had developed quite a phobia over) I had the exact experience.  It was difficult to say the least and very embarrassing.  I imagine it is tough to concentrate when you are feeling this way.  Hopefully you will discover some tricks to help you get through your presentations.  Good luck. And welcome.

Thanks all...

This is going to be a difficult week, as I'm slowly transitioning back to my normal job.  I need to make a couple of presentations this week: 5, 20, 30 and 40 minutes long, which are causing me to worry... Though, working through the workbook, and talking to my CBT are helping.

My biggest news today came from a phone call I made to a childhood friend.  He and I have known each other since the first grade, and on and on have kept in touch since.  He is one of those people that I know I can confide in, and so I told him about what I've been going through, and he talked about how he's been feeling trapped by very similar symptoms. He was the first person I've talked to, in person, who's ever understood exactly what we go through in our minds.  I liken myself to Jason Bourne sometimes... when I go into a new place... the first thing I do is look for the exits, the washrooms, etc.  He does the same thing.  Long car rides, especially as a passenger, and especially with people other than our spouses get us anxious.  Everything he said, and everything I said, the other understood and had experienced!

It was incredibly comforting knowing that someone else is experiencing the same thing. I know that this forum is full of such people, and I've read lots of threads with similar stories...but to have someone that you know personally, who you've known for ever.... that's very different.

At the end of our conversation, I told him about this website, and sent him the link...  I hope he follows it and maybe we can both work through this together and with everyone here.

Cheers, PTO

Hi pto,

Welcome! This is a great site, so I'm glad you found it. The program here is fantastic, and these support forums are invaluable too. Feel free to post any questions or thoughts at any time, and someone will surely get back to you before too long. It's a great, supportive environment here.

You've taken the important first step - making the decision that you are going to take control and get better!

Welcome PTO,

I echo Davit, anxiety and panic are learned behaviors therefore you can unlearn them and be cured.  I've successfully completed the program and I know you will too.  The coping skills you learn from the program, in addition to all of the help from friends on this support group, will result in success.  We're happy you're here.

Your friend,

We are going to surprise you. Your therapist will likely be in support of the program:-)
I have a therapist and a very good one. The difference is we are here every day and there is some one here almost all the time. We are also a group and group therapy is a proven. Read a few posts, the program has a good success rate.

What you have is a mental condition, not an illness. There is a difference. What you have is very curable. Very annoying though. I know, I used to blame it on the diuretic I was not taking when I was playing pool in the pub, I was constantly running to the can.

The program does work but you do have to do it.

By the way both coffee and tea are diuretics.

Here for you.
Davit.

Your very welcome Pto,

The anxiety you are describing is fairly common.  If you search through the forums I am sure you will find discussions on this topic.

The program can certainly help.  I encourage you to talk to your therapist about the program and share your homework and tests with him.

Be sure to post often!

I'm late 20s, and work in the aviation industry.   The short version of the story is that I've get panic attacks when I get in a situation where I can't easily to a washroom.  This is complicated by the fact that I have the urge to urinate when I get anxious, and the cycle continues.  It started as a problem in highschool that seemed to go away for the most part, but now it's become an issue again.  I took a couple weeks off work, and am now working in a different department while I get my head straightened out.  I can't wait to stop worrying constantly!

I've been going to see a CBT therapist, so this program and forum will hopefully be in support of what he says. I have not had a chance to really check out the program, but I plan to get into that later this week.

Nice to meet you Ashley!.. thanks again for your help earlier.
