Ergh,I can't be much help. That used to be one of my saving graces*driving alone*but I can't even do that now.I'm been trying to get people to come with me for short little rides as long as i'm driving but they refuse and just laugh at me.Just keep trying is all I can say at the moment.

Hi, TMG here I am new to the group and I also avoid any kind of driving as when I do push it as I am very stubborn it resulted in seizures. So glad I do have someone to rely on!

I have just recently, in the past few years, begun to dread long car trips. For me, it's being in an unfamiliar situation and, in a weird way, clausterphobia. I'm afraid of being sick and having to pull over and making a scene. I absolutely hate being in the car. I haven't driven in years, but this problem of not wanting to go on long trips is fairly new. We're leaving to go out of town tomorrow and I'm just terrified! Kittysmity

Hi dee12h, Cheryl is right, slow exposure. They teach you how to do this with the workbook. You gradually learn to adjust to every situation until finally you can ride in a car with little or no worry. Check back soon and let us know how you're doing. My Panic and Anxiety came from being in a car (heavy traffic made it even worse). I too wanted to be the one driving all the time. It felt like I had control, which meant everything was ok. If someone else was driving I would get very, very anxious because I no longer had control. The only way to give up that control is to do it gradually. Make sure you are letting someone you trust do the driving, then find something to distract yourself. Can you read and ride? Or just sit back in the seat with your eyes closed and concentrate on your breathing? I use to just bring a pillow with me and catch a cat nap or listen to a book on tape. It helped a lot. Each time you expose yourself to the sitution it gets a little better. Just take it slow and at your own pace. I found riding in the evenings easier (less people out plus its dark and no one would notice me if I was in panic mode). If your husband isn't understanding about it, find another family member or friend who will work with you. It CAN be overcome!!! Good luck to you, Cheryl

I am the same way. I get it both when riding with someone else, as well as on my own. Everything minute I have a different thought. Like when passing a vehicle, I think I will clip the corner and roll and dye. Or at night that a deer will jump out and I am screwed. The possibilities are endless, and so is my mind. Im not sure how to get over it. I get my bf to slow down if anything. I try and concentrate on something else (not easy!) so generally I am panic ridden until we're at our destination. And even then it takes quite some time to cool down.

Have you tried the Panic Program? The Panic Program is not talk therapy. Its not about medications either. Its a treatment program thats all about getting you actively involved in your own improvement. How great is that? It teaches you things you may not understand about panic and agoraphobia, your own panic, your own panic cycle, and as you learn and get involved, you begin the journey and the process of taking back control from a fear that at the moment is controlling you. But maybe this idea of doing scares you and you avoid it for that reason. Ive had emails from people who say this too. Well its not about someone telling you to smarten up or just get with it at all. Its a guide, a silent teacher, and a whole program. Its like going to a school that offers a course in your very own fears and how to beat your very own fears down. How would you feel on graduation day if you could do just that? It works this way: The Program guides you through the process of getting back this control. It prepares you for this, one single step at a time, and gives you some homework to bring you along from session 1 to session 2, and onward, in a series of 12 sessions over a period of twelve weeks. Many people want help for their panic and cant afford therapy. The Panic Program is offered free of charge to you. Don't pass up this opportunity. hello! I have anxiety while i'm riding the car period. Whether i'm driving or others are driving. Its really hard to deal with this cause the car (and plane) gets you to places that you really want to go to. But dont' worry, you will get better....i'm getting better too. We just gotta try to relax and think positive. NOthing is gonna happen to us!

I have GAD and my biggest problem is a lot of anxiety when I ride in the car with anyone. I inherited GAD and this specific phobia from my dad. I am a very anal and safe driver and only feel safe if I more my Dad or brother (or a professional driver) is driving. This is causing problems in my marriage, bc my husband thinks I don't trust him to drive and that I should just get over it. He gets impatient with me always having to drive or with my criticizing or "freaking out" with his driving. I still do let him drive a little around town, but long trips are terrible because of all the adrenalin flowing through my body for such a long period of time. This is all caused by thoughts and images flashing through my mind constantly of crashing and dying. I can keep them at bay for a few seconds but they return. Anybody else?
