New DC Team Member

Hi Brenna! Glad you could join the DC site as a Health Educator. Welcome to you! I'm returning Canada in 6 days for good and I will be talking to you (asking you about an exercise programme for me to deal with arthritis, a left ankle triple arthrodesis, poor lung power due to rotten habit of smoking (I'm almost 60 yrs - shame, shame) poor energy levels, 50% to do with arthritis and the chronic pain of it, and 50% to being overweight/and depressive. I need for someone to talk to me about aqua fitness. When I was in a chronic Pain rehab 5 years ago, the pool was only available once a week for 45 minutes and I need more than that to regain mobility. I'll be within driving distance of Ottawa and Montreal ( 1 hour each way). Looking forward to talking to you in a week's time. Good luck on the site Patrick

diagnosed bipolar but stuck in depression for 2 years now

Hi, me, I am sorry for the situation that you find yourself in right now. Now, you have to start rebuilding your life back up. First thing is, and congratulations, is that you've been diagnosed and that means that you are now aware of what's going on; you're aware that you have medical help in Canada to bring you back to a working-state with some more energy. You'll be going to a live group support at the hospital under the aegis of your psychiatrist (or you should be!). You'll notice the medicine take effect and stabilise you soon. The panic of being sick and alone will subside. You will start to make plans for your future, set yourself deliberate goals, one at a time ( starting your Sessions here will help you.) You can talk to us and tell us your story so we can get to know you and help you. Make short footsteps into these plans. Deal with the illness first by joining a support group. Turn to this site when you're not with the group and you feel panicky; the counsellors are listening to us all the time and have great concrete advice and support. Be 'religious' about taking your meds as prescribed. Eat properly (you don't have to cook fruit!) and walk up and down your apartment for exercise - speak to Brenna (new counsellor) about exercise you can do to maintain your energy and dopamine levels. I can't say anything valuable about your job situation or your money - tell us more about your circumstances so we can suggest other avenues of help for you... Talk to us

questions on sessions

Wildcat, Sorry but I'm up to my eyeballs with this packing and running around preparing to go back to Canada so I won't be able to settle down to the Session 3 until sometime next week when I'm set up; maybe later because I have so many things to do once I get back (car, doctor etc...) Go ahead without me. I'll be trying to get some work done in Session 3 but my wireless conncetion here in SA is the pits.... (Patrick)

The Daily Llama on your doorstep

Friends, I have changed by moniker on the advice of counsel. No more "light bulb" but a "bugle" to herald my newspaper deliveries in the future!! My "Mug" will be "in" the IM as the Daily Llama!!

Ms D, You're a poet! Very good piece on the pain and the longing to have done with it. Thanks - It'll come soon for you since you work so hard at it.

Anyone care?

Lady, I think that you misunderstood my post. There is no quality in what I said that 'condemns' your belief. I'm saying I don't understand it nor do I believe in a God. Would you have wanted me to ignore what is a huge part of your being (religion) and pretend that I didn't 'hear' you? Just letting you know how I feel about religion as you let me know how you feel when you post prayers. You've let me know that you are religious and I wanted to let you know that I don't. That was all it meant. Otherwise, I am really sorry that you are going through such pain as you express in your posts. I only hope that your meds and some live group therapy will help you to ease out of the bad dip you're in right now. Now that we've ironed this out I will answer your posts in the knowledge that you know what I feel. Thanks for responding to me

Bittersweet

Hello friends, Well, I am home in Canada and I'm settling in for the long (6months) wait for my wife and her two boys to get their immigration papers. It's great to be home among family and friends. My spirits are very good thanks to the move and the anticipation of a new life here for me and my wife. And careers and study opportunities for her two boys. South Africa was depressing but incomparably beautiful. No more living in compounds surrounded by razor-wire and guards. No more will the boys be mugged (5 times in 2.5 years I was there!) for their cellphones. It feels good to sit on a verandah here and look out across the fields and to watch the Canada geese gathering in their Vs to head South for the winter. And not to expect a BMW to screech to a halt and have three guys stick a pistol at my head demanding my cellphone and wallet. I say hello especially to Wildcat, Dumpling, Lady and Gabs - hope you're all fine. I'll be on the IM soon.

I'm Back. Should I take Effexor?

Congratulations Nullpointer! You sound much much better than you did 6 weeks ago - stronger, more humour, more chatty (communicativeness is good!) and less enthralled by what your fearing wife thinks about your illness. Does she 'get' what your illness is all about now?? I hope so... I would like to think that you're coming out of a bad depression and, I guess, that much of the support comes from the Effexor - but I think that you're really making good use of this site and the Sessions. Keep talking!

Thanks for the welcome back folks. I missed this site badly for the last week when I was incommunicado. Dumpling - very glad to see that you got a grip on the 'other' GPs and that they did as you asked. As for the DIL, what can you do? If she doesn't want to share her trials and tribulations at work with you then there's not much you can do after inviting her to talk to you about her "stuff"? Good news about the Effexor: I think a good SSRI eliminates the gross highs and lows and lets your 'strong' self take back the reins of your life. So, it's YOU you're seeing acting in Life now! Not the pill! How do you like yourself now!? Gabs, Hope all the busy days at the doctor's and the birthday parties are going well for you. Twister? Hi! I say Hello to you too... Later
