New symptoms? How To Combat Them?

13 years ago 0 18 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to be well and take care of myself. LOL- even that can make me panicky. My first mammogram tomorrow, one day at a time, I guess. I know all will be fine.

I have been trying to play "worst case scenario" and then think of methods to solve that worst case scenario. It seems to help a little.

Also handling the things that stress me out is helping. For instance, I felt bogged down a little with work and have begun to hire people to take on some of the more tedious process and boy do I feel relief tonight.

Still have the what if's though- my 5 yr old daughter has to have surgery on the 19th for a teeny, tiny cyst on her neck. It's supposed to be a relatively easy procedure with anesthesia- but she's so little and it's scary for me. All these thoughts run through my head- the worst case scenario thing. The really stupid part, is that I know she can handle anesthesia because she's had it for some dental work before. It just makes me angry that I cannot control these crazy thoughts.

Hi Deanna,

i have also been on 10mg of prozac for two weeks, and feel a bit beter already, and am also working through the program, my panic attacks had me so scared i was starting to avoid things so went on the meds to give my mind a rest while working through CBT, i dont know if hhusbands can cause panic attacks but like you mine is and has definately contributed to my anxiety and i would not mind at all if i could get a good break from him either.
I have tried to switch off from him and just concentrate on me for a while and you should try and do the same till you get stronger, you have a lot on your plate at the moment but you need to be well (especially for the kids)
I hope you start to feel a bit better soon, remember to be good to you.

Hi Deanna,

Thank you for sharing your story. Panic attacks are not fun, but remember that it won't hurt you. It seems as if you are going through a difficult time. I am on 10mg of prozac and my anxiety has gone away for the most part. Everyone is different (as my therapist and doctor has explained to me) so please don't compare my situation to yours. Theraputic doses for everyone is different. For me 10mg works just fine. Also, you need to give it at least 3 weeks before you start to see your symptoms slightly improve. Week after week, you should feel more like yourself. The trial period is at least 6 weeks to see any notible improvement in symptoms. Also, don't feel bad about taking the Ativan. It you need it to get through this period until the prozac kicks in,  then that is what you need.

I have cried too. Mostly because I wanted to feel "normal" too and mostly because I feel that I had no control. Now, I feel much better. And, I know you will too! Keep doing the program. Re-read the sections and continue to post. We are all here for you. When I first started posting I was suprised how many people we supportive and responsive.

This experience is different for everyone, but as my therapist explained it, once the medication kicks in you will be able to cope better with your panic attacks and work on the exposures. The process of "habituation" takes place and you start to feel better about things and as you feel better, an option is to taper off the medications. The process requires patience and be kind to yourself. It is not easy. But know that you are not alone!!!

Yesterday, for example, I took the subway and had no panic/anxiety symptoms. It was the first time I felt like that in years. Now, I am in the process of booking a plane ticket. It takes time. But, don't give up. We are here for you.

Hope that helps.

Hi Everyone,

As I continue to wrestle with my panic attacks-seems like a daily occurrence and waiting for 20 mg of Prozac to kick in. I am going into my 3rd week of Prozac as well as very low dose of atavan as needed.

The good that I have noticed is that as the days go by- the panic attacks are less severe. Meaning I'm no longer getting every symptom, like I was. Mine were harsh- tingling-numb arms, chest tightness, chest pains, hot flushing feelings, strong urge to escape, hard to breathe, dizziness.

The bad: Every morning I feel shaky and get the opposite of the hot flush in my chest, now its a cold flush. Then my throat bothers me- feels like I have too tight of a turtle neck on or something.

Seems on average I am having 2 mild panic attacks a day- usually in the morning when I first wake up and then at night right before bed.

For those that are on Prozac-  does it ever get to the point that-the panic attack symptoms subside totally? I mean I am seeing an improvement and that is a good thing- but last night I cried like a baby just wishing I can be normal again.

I am working the panic program daily-I'm just in my first week. I so desperately need to conquer this-I guess I'm feeling impatience with myself and maybe even beating myself up a little. I should be stronger than this and I guess I have control issues. For once in my life-I don't feel in control and it scares me to death.

Then the timing of this panic attack/anxiety problem is really bad- trying to get a company off the ground and getting ready to sign an exclusivity contract-which is a major accomplishment.

A marriage that I want out of- I honestly feel as if being with my husband is causing them. In fact my 3 girls are affected too. My oldest is on prozac too and my 13 yr old attempted suicide a few months back.

Is it possible for a person to cause or at least contribute to anxiety/panic attacks?

Anyway-sorry so long winded here, just really trying to get this figured out. My future looks bright-but damn this panic and anxiety! {smile}

Deanna
