Jazz, I have quit many times. I do remember a couple of quits I had that feeling. I learned that nicotine has a paralyzing effect on parts of the body. Many things we begin to feel is our body waking up. There is sensations that don't feel familiar to you as you didn't feel them before. As always....anything that last too long should be checked out by a doctor. Hey.... you are at three weeks!!! You should be very proud....BOTH OF YOU. Jazz, not only is it different for different people. But the withdrawal symptoms or healing signs are different each time you quit. I had that chest heaviness last year when I quit and felt like my chest wall was going to cave in. I haven't had that this time, but it will ease up and get better. It's kind of scary when that happens because you realize just what you've done to your lungs! Why did we ever do such a thing?? I remember from when I first stopped that I had a certain amount of tightness on the chest and that, certainly, a number of people seemed to mention it on here too. Thanks to all for your informative responses. I guess the body's had a real shake-up and everything needs to adjust, especially the lungs. On the whole, I can breathe a whole lot better already after just 3 weeks. Even yawns are more enjoyable! Jazz, This has been reported among new quitters. Keep in mind that your lungs are probably trying to clear themselves of all the tar smoking introduced. If your symptoms persist, worsen or accompanied by other symptoms, consult your MD. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

Hi Jazz, I felt a tightness in my chest off and on for a month or so. Then when I could really take a deep breath it was weird feeling too! Smoking effects us in ways we are not aware of or we would never smoke at all. No one wants to poison themselves. Because breathing was one of the benefits of not smoking I kept a record. I could do three (3) one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three's. counted slowly at the end of one week smoke free. I am happy to say I now can do eight (8). that is proof of progress. Hi Jazz Sorry I can't help you with this one .What I do know that everbody recovers from smoking in different ways.Strange that both you and your husband would have the same symptoms.Sounds like theres a common denominator in your home that is affecting both of you ??? just a thought. One way or the other if it persists see you doctor. Good morning everyone! I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced a heaviness in their chest after quitting. Both hubby and I are getting really deep breaths now which is great, but once in a while we wake up and feel like we've smoked a full pack of smokes the night before. It usually passes within 20 minutes. I'm glad we both are feeling this because I think I'd be more concerned if it was just one of us. Anyone else experience this?
