I am not over weight according to the charts, but I have a few pounds that have found my "trunk" and they need to get out. I have always been on the slender side, but I have gained about 15 pounds. But the reason for that is bad eating habits and for that I am responsible. I lost a quit about a year ago because of weight issues, not this year. I am now ready to eat healthy and put the cookies away for 10 pounds then a small reward :eg: I have started walking and when I walk I loose so it makes sense to walk. I also go to Curves at least 4 times a week. Bring on summer :p Oh, yes Windy there are a lot of heavy (weight) smokers out there. In fact one of my friends is "heavy" and doesn't consider quitting because she is afraid of gaining, duh? I don't know about you guys but I seem to watch smokers alot more now. I have noticed that MANY smokers are not that thin. I've also noticed that thin smokers often look very unhealthy (especially complexion) It motivates me to work at healthy eating and exercise because healthy people look GREAT! In the beginning of my quit, I was just too tired or depressed to motivate myself to do any physical activity. It was all I could do to lie in bed, watch TV or read a book. I did things like the hot baths or maybe some shopping, and the normal errands that need to be done. these actually helped me distract..getting groceries, going to the bank, getting my teeth cleaned, paying bills, etc. I gained 25 pounds and have now lost 5 of those. I have a ways to go. Now that the quit is getting a little easier, I feel more like doing some physical activity. I rode my bike to do all my errands on Saturday. But, it took me a long time to have the motivation. Tresa, you are too funny! Though... I can relate. I actually put off quitting for a long time because I wanted to lose just 5 more pounds 1st. Let me tell you, there were ALWAYS 5 more pounds to be lost. :) Finally I decided to quit smoking 1st. Then tackle any weight issues. If I can quit smoking, I can do anything! Right? A friend of mine started Weight Watchers when she quit smoking as a preventative measure. It worked for her. I, on the other hand, could only fight one battle at a time. I realize I'm only a little over a month into my quit, but I have already gained 8 pounds (over the 5 I wanted to lose in the 1st place). I started a new diet/exercise program late last week and have already lost 4 of them. Yea!! I'm really glad I didn't use weight as an excuse not to quit this time. Iam one of those that have been on a diet since i was 18, tho sometimes i tell myself , what for just get into relaxing and dont worry about the weight, well iam telling you i dident quit smoking to die from Fat surrounding my heart, i did gain slowly but surley 25 pounds by thinking i dident care, when my inner legs started rubbing together it was time to shed that weight, i wondered just how i could handle my diet and i decided ill do it like my smoke quit , oh you can have one cookie ?? there are Junkie thoughts in the diet too, lol. Members, Gaining weight when quitting smoking is a common concern. However not everyone gains weight after quitting. Some people do, but usually only five or six pounds. Two things seem to cause this weight gain. First, your body metabolism slows down when you quit, so you don't need as much food as when you were smoking. Second, you may use food to replace cigarettes and end up eating a bit more than before. Tips to avoid gaining weight while maintaining a quit: Eat healthy, tasty, well-balanced meals as much as possible. Avoid fad diets. Since food may taste better after you quit, you may want bigger helpings. Try to eat the same amount as usual. Nicotine withdrawal can cause constipation. Drink lots of fluids. Eat low-fat snacks like crackers, fruits, veggies or toast, instead of donuts, candy, or potato chips. Moderate your use of alcohol. Keeping your hands busy with smoking may have slowed up your drinking before. Without a cigarette, your rate and number of drinks may increase along with your weight. Get up and get moving! Physical activity can help to counteract any weight gain. Start with a small achievable goal. Example: Walking 10 minutes everyday. Once you�ve gotten into the routine, change the activity goal. Example: Walking 20 minutes everyday, attending a fitness class once a week, join a sports team, take up a hobby that gets you moving like rock climbing or dancing. What is key to remember is that increasing your level of physical activity requires changing your routine, therefore selecting a goal that is in tone with your current lifestyle in the beginning makes it a more manageable change and thus more sustainable over the long-term.
