What a sick disease

17 years ago 0 23 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I'm just reminded how sick and powerful this disease is, since I've just stopped smoking again. My father passed away from emphysema, his identical twin brother died of emphysema, their mother had emphysema,(though she never smoked a day in her life), my mother is addicted the Albuteral, after smoking for nearly 40 years, my sister has all kinds of bronchial problems, and my brother is back to 2 packs a day. I don't want to wind up with life suport doing my breathing for me, and I know if I smoke, I already have a predetermined disposition, and will in all likelihood, wind up that way. It is very humbling to see someone hooked up to these machines, and it disgusts me to know I might end up that way, yet I continued smoking, until now. I am on my 3rd day without a smoke, and will not say I will NEVER smoke again, but I know I will pray for the ability to not smoke TODAY, and ask just for TODAY. If you've never seen a loved one on a respirator, taking their every breath for them, you are fortunate. Even though I did go through it, it's been a long time, and I got complacent. Next time I want to smoke, I will call someone for support, I will put their picture in front of me, and remember how their life was cut short from the damn addiction, and do whatever I can to not pick up again. Thanks for letting me rant, I need to get some of this anger out. Huey61, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Yes it is a horrible addiction! I could tell you stories you wouldn't even believe! Glad to see your resolve to stay quit is strong. Perhaps it would be helpful to you to put together a quit journal? It will keep you busy and give you something to run to instead of a cigarette while you wait for responses from SSC members. It could include: * Pictures and notes of the people who's lives have been ruined by smoking * Research you've done filled with stats about how bad smoking is for you, pictures of tar filled lungs... * A ongoing list of the benefits you've gotten from your quit * Printouts from our forums such as our stories from the Hall of Fame * Journal logs from days on which you rewarded yourself. Keep persevering! We are proud to see you @ 3 days standing strong! Danielle ___________________________ The SSC Support Team

I too watch family memebers die from smoking; yet I kept on smoking. I was different, more than likely I'll get cancer anyway - why stop. You know the head games. I know that today I just want to be smoke free. Hang tight and congrats on three days My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/2/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 74 Amount Saved: $21 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 23 Mins: 51 Seconds: 26

One day at a time Huey. That is how we all quit. Using N.O.P.E. one day at a time, one step at a time. Congratulations on your 3 days quit. You are 1/2 way through hell week. Hang on tight and hold on to that attitude. You can do it.
