Nice work Galianna. You deserve support through this. I am so glad you are making your health a priority. It is not easy to ask for help and you did it! With the attitude you have, I have no doubt you will get the required support.

Did you hear from the counsellor yet?

I called LifeWorks to ask to have an appointment with a councillor. Someone should be calling me early next week to set things up. As I am not good at asking for help, making that phone call was a big step for me. This time I am not going to suffer in silence about the pain or the depression. I intend to follow every avenue that is available to me.

I am so sorry to read about your pain Galianna.

Chronic pain can certainly trigger negative feelings and depression. It sounds like you are doing all the right things (meditation, physio). So, I don't have too many suggestions for you other then to look into mindfulness for chronic pain if you haven't already.

I hope you start to feel a bit better. I am sending you positive thoughts and energy your way. Continue to take good care of yourself.

I'm back! Had a major set back 2 weeks ago. My chronic pain in shoulders and arms became over whelming at work. To many years working 40 hours in front of a computer. Even though I had a week vacation in May, my shoulders did not get better. I had the scary feeling of 'wish I was dead". A little shocking as I had not been in that frame of mind in 25 years. Back at work I struggles almost every day just to keep from going home. I was bidding my time till my next appointment. Survived till appointment day, when I cried in the doctor's office while asking for help. I asked her if she would she put me off work to get away from the stress of a very busy office while I tried to get my head together. Yes, I am in physiotherapy. I have been down that road many times before over the past 4 years. Naturally my family doctor gave me more meds. Her usual course of action. She did order ex-ray of the shoulder and I have since learned of its arthritis. Doctor also gave me cortisone shot in shoulder.(I am thankful for spell-check) True, I am working on gratitude exercises and lots of meditation to help me get straight with the pain. I have had many cortisone shots over the past 5 years in hips and elbows without much success. I have had to learn to go with the normal Doctor solutions even though I have had little success with them in the past. As a normally very active person, I look at all the things I would like to do with regret. Send Love and Blessings. Galianna

For medical advice always, always consult your doctor as we are unable to give advice in regards to medication. I just did a quick search on risperidone and the website below says to talk to a doctor immediately if you experience anxiety.

I have recently been placed on the anti-depressant Zoloft for my depression and anxiety.  I was initially diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.  I woke up one day not knowing what was real and what wasn't.  It was very scary.  I struggle with depression all day long.  I can't seem to stop crying and I don't know why.  I am also taking Resperidone. Could medications be causing my anxiety and panic attacks?  I am afraid to stop taking the medications because I don't want to have another episode where I am in a dreamlike state.  I am scared and every decision I try to make feels overwhelming.  How do I cope? I want to less the severity and frequency of my anxiety attacks but don't know where to start.  Does anyone have any advice?

Hi Galianna,

Congratulations on the new addition to the family! How exciting.

You ask some important questions. Depression can have a genetic component. Environmental components (what they have experienced, learned, been exposed to etc.) normally has the biggest impact on whether or not someone develops recurrent depression. Individuals with ADHD are more prone to depression and anxiety. Additionally, individuals with anxiety disorders may also be more prone to depression due to the challenges they must face. The good news is depression, anxiety and ADHD are all very manageable mental health concerns.

I think it's great that your daughter's partner and you are taking her post-partum related depression seriously. It is normal for women to feel down a few days after giving birth. I hope your daughter starts to fee better soon. She is fortunate to have such a caring and understanding mother like you.

Hello to you all. I am a Grandmother. Yep, three weeks ago my daughter had a girl. Steep learning curve for my daughter and her boyfriend. I was pretty excited to see the little one. I had second visit this weekend. We live in different provinces, so there is some traveling involved. Shortly after getting home from hospital, my daughter told me she was having periods of what she described as feeling disconnected. She was having periods of just gazing off into space, and her boyfriend would notice and have to speak to her to bring her back. I was quick to suggest she discuss the experiences with her doctor. Fortunately the next (after baby) appointment was the following week. Her boyfriend went with her and was able to describe his take on her behaviour. I am thrilled that she has a fellow that is supportive and keen to help. Yes, the family doctor described an anti-depressant. Some might say that it is the common post-natial blues and that it will go away. My question would be, do any of you find that depression is hereditary? My daughter was diagnosed with ADH with Hyperactivity when she was in grade 2. She has had panic attacks as a teen and young adult. She used to call me when she felt an attack coming on, to have someone talk calmly to her and calm her down. I was reading something today that a person with panic attacks can become a person with depression.
