Hi - I'm new to the group, but not new to depression.

Hi there, I've been going through an interesting time. Not ready to talk about it, so let's just say it's been interesting. But I've been handling it very well. Saw my dr today and he was surprised at the med cocktail I am on now, but since I have been relatively mood stable, he gave me new scripts for everything. One thing I think I can say. I am now more aware of some of my own values. Yes, I want to take pride in what I do. Yes, I like to be given "chewy" challenging work assignments and being successful at them is a real high. But the successes I have with my staff, with my family mean far more to me. My value system places a high index on loyalty, encouragement, support, empathy, and making sure that other people can be successful in their jobs and lives. Interesting realization for me. Re: seeing something sad in public...I remember a couple of years ago I was walking along the street, having come from a relatively fancy restaurant and was heading to a classical concert. There was a homeless man sitting on the street with his hat out for money. He looked up at me, and said 'Smile pretty lady, life's not that bad!" Wow. I was going through a depressed time, but for someone in his circumstances to say that to me... gave me pause. Suzy

Suzy, Haven't heard from you for a while. Are you okay? What I was trying to say is that it's not good for me to fall apart whenever I see something sad in public, even knowing that the situation is only a mild aberration in an otherwise very human life; it's not criminal to lose one's temper in the supermarket or to be drunk and freezing on the sidewalk. Okay, so I'm hypersensitive when I'm prone to depression and these little sights and sounds had a tendency to bowl me over. Thanks to SSRIs I can be more "mature" about my reactions to everyday street miseries - ones that should have "no consequence" in my mood really. Prozac has just taught me self-defence techniques that I didn't have before I started using it.

Prozac is oone of the drugs I haven't tried. So I don't know exactly how it would affect me let alone someone else. I don't find that anti-depressants make more more indifferent to life's sadder situations. It allows me to realize that every life can have bad moments that are seen in pulic, but there could be private moments that make up for them and we just don't know about those ones. We can't just evaluate a person's life by a few moments of their day. So sorry, no real help on this one. ttfn suzy

Suzy, Good!! Relieved here. Cryptic note: if it's broken, don't try to fix it (I mean the higher level of meds)- time enough to reassess your stability/plateau when you've got a good thing going. Did you say that your doctor gave you the go-ahead to be flexible? Mine did and he didn't think it was such a big deal within the range he advised... If I overdose on Prozac does that mean that I'll be even more indifferent to inconsequentialities in life around me? I mean the drooling depressions I'd get into when I saw a drunken homeless person, or a child being chastised in the Supermarket by his worn-out mother? I can handle what I consider a harder approach to 'being in the world' with the higher doses of Prozac I need now and again. It's a little artificial Zen when I most need it... Patrick

Hi there. I've been really busy!! The course was great. I was able to harness the mania and shine - I love it when that happens. It's part of me, and when I can call it up and manage to control it then good things happen. When I present to people, it is like I'm another person. The two lives again. I got lots of good feedback from the rest of the attendees which was gratifying. Not really surprising, I have to admit (though that seems quite snobbish of me). Even though I am nervous just like most people, I am able to push it aside and be "on stage". I have been told a few times that I had missed my calling and I should be a motivational speaker. Maybe someday I will. I only altered the meds for a couple of days, and then I felt up enough that I didn't want to keep them at the increased level any longer. So I am at my regular doses now and doing fine. Just the way I like myself. This weekend was a nice little break. Routine things: shopping, laundry, sleeping (YES!!!). Almost makes me afraid of what might be around the corner, lurking in wait. A rhythmic swing down? A swing down caused by something? Oh well. Time will tell. Suzy

Alright, Suzy! You're either doing great on your meds and busy as hell or you're in a mental dumpster trying to sleep on a cardboard box. Which is it? Last week you had Thanksgiving and and the Provincial elections and Public Speaking and this week you're doing your imitation of Henry Fonda in Twelve Angry (People) Men. I hope all the schedule-thing is what's keeping you busy and not the depression. Miss your posts. Patrick

Yeah Suzy, Cilift is just another SSRI and is good for anxiety and mild agoraphobia. It's on the web and details are not very exciting. Not good for migraine suffers nor HBP people. Patrick
