Getting by.

Davit,

I moved the Irises to another location and prepped the baskets for strawberries for spring. I will go to a local nursery for plants that are ever bearing and hopefully 2-3 years old. I've read that newer strawberry plants don't bear fruit well the first year. I didn't realize the farmers market was closed yesterday so I have no Apples for Apple Butter today. I could use some of your apples :)  Today I am cutting up fabric for another quilt.

JayDee.

I washed so many jars and pots and dishes I feel like a prune. But all the pickling is done. All the carrots except one bucket are done and Karin got a good start on braiding the onions and hanging them up. I washed some carrots and ran them through the juicer and she made carrot cake with the pulp. I made spaghetti and meat sauce for supper so I couldn't make apple butter. I am going to shred all the small onions in a processor and freeze it for potato pancakes. The thick necked onions that don't braid well will go in a basket instead. This time of year onions can rot from too much rain or from frost so we brought them in. It would be a shame to lose a years worth of onions. I will start digging potatoes soon. It sounds like a lot of work but actually is just time consuming and since I'm retired time I have. I'm planting garlic in my flower bed where it won't even be noticed. A person could do that with a few onions. We plant too many onions to do that. I'm also going to start making Sauerkraut. I don't know why good organic Sauerkraut is so expensive, it is very easy to make. Tastes better too.
Apples are starting to fall to the ground now. We have way more apples than we can use so I will take out two more trees this year. Just going to keep two apple trees and a crab apple tree.
Irises will grow almost anywhere except shade. We have lots, unfortunately only one colour. Still they are pretty. Strawberries are still producing a few berries.
I love gardening but since I start in doors so I have plants to set out it is a six month hobby.

Davit,

Glad you are getting your harvesting done. There is nothing that compares to real whipped cream. Now I am in the mood for my famous peanut butter pie. Of course that won't be made until November. I am headed to the market today to purchase Apples for Crockpot Apple Butter that I will start tomorrow in two crockpots. Today I am pulling flowers from baskets on deck fence so I can plant Strawberries in them next spring and am considering moving my Irises so I can plant something edible there as well.

It rained again last night. That doesn't matter unless my cabbages start to blow up. I'm so tired but most of the critical stuff is done. I can slow down again. There are still beets and onions in the kitchen to pickle but that shouldn't take more than the morning. It is a good thing I like doing this or it would be major stress. As it is it is major stress on my body and it does affect my thinking. As a treat I am having carrot pie (like pumpkin) with real whipped cream. I deserve it for sticking to this through the rain. Over the next few days we will braid onions and hang them up. There are at least a years worth. I won't have to buy onions, carrots, potatoes or pickles. Or pumpkins and apples for pies. If we have freezer room I could make enough apple juice too. If it doesn't freeze we will get more squash.
The worst part is I'm in a rut and don't know how to slow down. It is a good rut though, not like a panic rut.
Going to try though. Starting with a coffee which I will thoroughly enjoy. Bad side effects and all.
Fall is coming, a time of year I enjoy if I'm not rushed. Some leaves are already turning and some apples are falling.
It smells different too.

Just thought I would mention this. Did you ever notice how we use words that are negative out of habit without noticing it. Take the word "well" that I use. It denotes disappointment and is negative even though I don't mean it that way. And to me it is just that, just a statement denoting a fact. I didn't get the dill harvested and I'm disappointed that I didn't. But attitude keeps the negative in it from affecting me. It is a concern, not a worry so it has little effect.
For someone with a different attitude the use of the word often enough could cause depression. Probably even subconsciously influencing attitude. As in "oh well there is nothing I can do, so it is hopeless".
How do you see words we commonly use to express? Do they influence or are they just meaningless habit? Hopefully the latter.

Well the dill is still standing but the last of the carrots are soaking in buckets in the rain. Tomorrow some time we will wash them and possibly freeze at least some. Karin has been talking about apple sauce spice cake with cream cheese frosting. I think we can find time to make that. I will get up before her and pickle the bucket of beets I brought in today. This morning I did six more bags of carrots. (a canner full) There is probably eight or ten more bags unless we juice some. We could do that. We also want to make slow cooker apple butter.
It is slowly getting done. There is still a bucket of beets, a row of cabbage, pole beans, peas and the pumpkins and squash in the garden. Less than half the garden, not counting potatoes that are in a different garden. Straw berries are still growing and should like all this rain. I need to check the garlic but unless it is yellow it can stay there. Probably dry some Basil and of course the Lemon Balm.  Cucumbers are probably done but the tomatoes are still going.
This is more than hobby, it is a good bit of my years food and it can cause anxiety till it is done. The weather doesn't always cooperate. Today it rained then shone all day. Raining again right now. A change from the hot dry summer. Potatoes will take a few days to dig. Some plants are dead some still growing and there are still raspberries but not many. There are also two large jerusalem artichokes but they seldom produce anything. Finally there are the apples to juice. And I still want to go fishing :-) . It is a lot of work in a short time but the benefits last all year. We may have to plug in another deepfreeze. In years past I would do chickens and butcher a yearling cow also. That is just too much work now. I don't need the stress.

Well it was a little hard getting mobile but I did some work in flower beds before making pickled beets and washing carrots. Planted ten garlic cloves in a flower bed. The parent bulbs were almost half a pound and very strong. Red skinned hard neck. You won't find this garlic in chain stores. You might find it at farmers markets. I bought these from our tiny store. They were from one of the owners.
I plan on bringing in the dill to dry and to make more pickled beets.

Today I went for my check up. My eyes are both fine and I have 20/20 most of the time. Some times my meds or inflammation will change that a bit but not very much. Not enough to be a concern.
I didn't want to go because I knew at some point Karin would get tired and yell at me. Which she did. For the third and final time. I believe in the rule of three. Every one gets three chances. Basically three strikes and you are out. So we will go nowhere and do nothing together anymore. I will drive her to the airport to go visit her mother and I will pick her up, but that is necessity not pleasure. I'm taking care of me. I've come too far to let anxiety rule my life anymore. Besides we are too different to do anything together. Strangers sharing the bills is all.
I'm going to make pickled beets, a few jars at a time while doing other things because they are big enough. I need to sort jars for peaches too although I may freeze some. Freezing is easier. I'm making mock pumpkin pies out of last years carrots to make room for this years. It is just as good a pumpkin. I have four large pumpkins also, so there will be a lot of pie or just custard. Karin lives on processed food so the garden has been a waste of time for her. Not me, I could live on almost nothing but my garden.
There is so much to do yet and the new well still to put in. Something may not get done before the snow.

Can't sleep, might as well get up and have a coffee and clean the kitchen. I had a bad arthritic flare but it is past. I should be able to get something done today.

Thanks for answering. I know it can lonely on this website, but I was inspired by some responses from some of the new members. I did wonder how you deal with an email, which shouldn't have been sent? Usually I edit, but I'm really out of my element these days... I regret sending it, and can't "unsend" it, as time runs out. Guess I could just apologize? I have a lifetime of more errors, anyway. Who's perfect....
