devastated; my friend went back to smoking

Hi new me, Wow. Your one year anniversary is just around the corner already! So, here is a cool thing - you said:
She was one of my heros when it came to quitting smoking.
Now you have a chance to be her hero. Your example can encourage her to quit whenever she is ready. She may not say it, but she knows that if you can stay quit then she can quit again. You are probably impacting her smoking more than she is impacting your quit :) All the best My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1301 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 26,020 Amount Saved: $5,854.50 Life Gained: Days: 101 Hrs: 10 Mins: 4 Seconds: 27

Thank you everyone, Yes, anxious, I do think that was part of the reason that I was so upset. I wondered, "why did your mind go back to smoking after 8 years? Did you have a craving? Were you still thinking about smoking? Why was THAT your response?" But, mostly I was upset because I know how she struggled, and I fear for her bacause of her family history of cancer. So true, Sparky, about the long butts..I've feel prey to them many times. Lately, when I see them out on the patio, I crush them and throw them in the garbage. I do not ever want to be a smoker again. It is a tough road, expensive, smelly, and tiring. Quitting is a tough road also, at times, but we are walking towards freedom. The smokers are traveling towards sickness and addiction. Quitting is serious business, stay serious about quitting. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 277 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,648 Amount Saved: $1,385.00 Life Gained: Days: 38 Hrs: 15 Mins: 31 Seconds: 41

New Me, this may sound harsh and I certainly don't want to come off that way, but if someone is going to smoke let it be someone else. Let them do the home work and then tell you how bad it is. You see I was that someone else for what seemed liked forever. I can tell you that your friend is not comfortable with smoking. I can tell you that she is hiding some of her smoking. That hiding it is way to much work. The shame that comes with it is awful. You see I have done my home work on slips and I do not ever want to do it again. Those long butts :8o: OMG do those bring back memories. Here a good one, I can smoke that one and still say I haven't bought any cigs so things are good, right? The list can go on and on and on. You be the best example there is, don't smoke. Smoking doesn't make her a bad person and she needs to know that too. You take care of your 276 hard fought for days. Keep the quit Sparky My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 302 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,020 Amount Saved: $906.00 Life Gained: Days: 42 Hrs: 19 Mins: 50 Seconds: 40

Hi New me. I completely understand where you are coming from, I think. Everytime I see somebody (just this AM as a matter of fact) that has gone back to smoking, I panic. I believe it cannot be done and sooner or later I will fail to. BUT, then, I remind myself of all of the people around me still who are quit and never would go back. Most of them say because they don't want to have to quit again!! How True. Life hands us turns, we all deal with them differnely, so you are different from your friend, as I am from those I confront here. I does make me panic and feel afraid. I feel like I am the biggest addict there is, and if a lesser addict cant do it, how can I. The one thing I can see, is the sadness in their eyes..they hate themselves for being smokers again, they are very sad. I try to remember that, sometimes I feel sad during this process, but it would be even worse if I started smoking again. I know, its happened before. Heaven forbid if it happens to me again, I will be right back on the quit train. I know, deep in my soul that smoking is something I detest, no matter how much the junkie in me trys to convince me otherwise. I want to be a non smoker, thats why I am still here. I wish you the best of luck, maybe you can now help your friend. Hi Newme! Sorry about your friend. I guess the lesson to learn is that we always have to be ready for life's twists and turns and always have our strategies at hand! Good for you for figuring out that smoking isn't the answer for her and for you! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 358 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,950 Amount Saved: $3,776.90 Life Gained: Days: 47 Hrs: 0 Mins: 33 Seconds: 3

New me, Sorry to hear about your friend. Take this experience and learn from it! Look how easy she fell back in. Could happen to any quitter so keep your guard up at all times. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

New Me - Yikes. Sorry to hear about your friend. Our minds can definitely mess with us at times like this. I feel sorry for your friend to think that she will have to go through another quit - we all know how hard it is, especially those first few days/weeks. The thing is, she will quit because no one wants to be a smoker. Encourage her to come here to the SSC. We'll all help! In the meantime, hang in there New Me-- your big anniversary is within reach!
