Hi Nonic, thanks so much for everything. My first day went smoothly. In the evening, for the very first time in my life I experienced how awful other people�s smoking meant to me. Not a moral judgment or psychological pain of any sort, I just found my chest aching by each puff of my friends! I could not stand it and had to leave the room for some fresh air! Nonic Thanks again for your valuable hints. I�ll bet having a mental techniques to avoid craning would be of a great help but until now I have passively followed (watched) my emotional crises and waited for their ends. No technique other than being the only spectator of my [i]self[/i] tragicomic show! Back to your suggestion, I might start with the morning papers (part of a very effective Julia Cameron�s method to liberate your inner artist, in The Artist�s Way) and then drop a note whenever my crises show up. mitri Good to hear that you made it through...I understand the aversion to other people's smoking now...That was not true a short 50 days ago...But in the end I feel sorry for people standing out there dragging away because I know they want to quit, but have yet to step up to the plate... You on the other hand are standing in at Yankee Stadium and facing down one of the meanest addictions known to man...Stay around here and read all of the posts that you can, you will find that reading will not only help you understand the addiction, it will underline your desire to overcome it...And you can over come this thing...One of the greatest hurdles for me has been unwinding my emotional responses from around the smokes, it takes practice, but it can be done...For me (remember not everybody's quit is the same), the physical problem is far less of a hurdle than the emotional. I have been self medicating for years and I know it...Now I have to retool my emotive responses, so that I can function in the world without appearing to be an ogre or a blithering idiot...In any case I will do this thing, I have set my mind to it... I am so glad that your work went well and you felt comfortable...Did you make a mental note of the techniques you employed when the going got a bit rough...Once you find things that work, use them over and over, they will soon become learned responses to adverse stimuli and you will do them without thinking...I like to keep a journal as well...It helps me see where I have been and what has worked in the past... Keep going at this and pretty soon you will be free as bird...Thats the goal to get to that place where your not keyed into cigs, but keyed into your own beautiful self... Hello Well its 3:00 am and I find myself back in the shadow lands again. I must have been dreaming, but I cannot recall the substance of the dreams. I do however feel their heaviness. I have woken into the desire to have a smoke. Or should I say the desire to smoke has been awakened in me. I know now that after so many years of this behavior all of my being is programmed to honor this particular desire. Honor that is a very bad word to use in this connection, but for a smoker, it is sadly appropriate. To honor a thing is to hold it in great esteem. In truth we all have done this...But in order to have respect for a person place or thing, we must be saying that we see parts of that entity that are wonderful, remarkable or worthy in some fashion or other...The parts of a cigarette surely do not deserve any of those adjevtives. In a person, we might hold them in great esteem because we see bravery in their hearts. We might see hope in their eyes or kindness in their ways. A place may be held in high esteem because of sacred events or associations. A thing may be held in esteem for sentimental reasons. But a cigarette has no place here. Its parts are a formula for sickness and death. Its contains over 4000 chemicals that are injested with each puff of the weed. It clouds the mind and dulls the senses to the point that we actually believe that we need this thing to function. And it lies to us every time it "lifts" the mood...Remember now that the term lift has two meanings...In one way it means to "elevate" in another way it means to "steal"... as in that guy just lifted my wallet...And steal it does...Nicotene is a place to go when we feel powerless to deal with the tnings that cause us pain. But in the doing of this, it steals our natural ability to heal our own suffering. It steals our ability to find solace in our own resources. It demands our attention and distracts us from seeing the beautiful nature that each of us possesses. I do hope that you are all fighting hard against this thing...I know it is hard and that some of you are suffering greatly...I would encourage you to learn as much as you can about this addiction.
