Do you have a smoking spouse?

15 years ago 0 967 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
My husband quit smoking cigarettes about 2 months into my quit, it did make it challenging, but the Chantix helped.  He still smokes grape cigars without "inhaling", whatever, to me he is still going through the act.  He only does it at night in the laundry room or out in the hot tub when having a beer.  It doesn't tempt me, it stinks.  On fathers day, my husband and his dad (who recently just started smoking again after a year and a half quit) had an argument and he left the house leaving his cigs behind in my garage.  They are still just sitting there untouched, I know there sitting there, but I could care less.  I was going to throw them out, but they are expensive, so he can take them back when he comes over next.   Weird how this addiction works, I have cravings at really odd unpredictable times, not the common ones like an open pack of cigs...today we went for a walk around our building on our break, I was scared to do it, it was the same walking route I used to take on my last quit and used to fret the whole walk, strange how memories can stay with you that way.  Now I am rattling...thats my story.

Hi Danielle,

I've tried several differant hours of the day thus far... I think early morning is the only one left to try, and that may be the right time.  It seems to really fluctuate from day to day and I haven't found any sort of pattern.  There seems to be so many smokers in my area that if there is another person at the pool, then there will be a smoker there.

I've considered writting to the homeowners association board and asking them to consider making it a no smoking area, but i've met at least two of the board members - at the pool.... smoking, so I don't think that will do much but get them keeping their eyes on me.  lol

MM,

Have you thought of going on off hours? Is there another perhaps indoor pool you could attend?

I could use some advise in this area.  My hubby doesn't smoke and never has, but for the first time since I quit I am regularily exposed to second hand smoke, and I'm not quite sure how to handle it.  We moved to a place that has a community pool, and the regular swimming has really been a huge deel to my health as i'm able to excercise harder in the water than I can anywhere else because of my bad leg.  It's also proven to be a great family activty that's bonding, fun and  an all around good time with the kids.
Problem is when the smokers get there, and I think i've told you all before that the city I live in has a LOT of smokers - we live right across the river from the casinos of Laughlin NV, so we kind of live in that environment.  So, basically, there's very few people that show up that don't smoke.  The pool is outdoors, but it seems like that smoke just hangs over us.  I dealt with it Ok for a while, but last night someone lit up and instead of being put off, I was rather glad.  That scared me and I got as far away as I could... but, honestly, what do I do now?

My husband smokes and we had some rough times at the beginning, but I'm still quit.

And, yes, DL, seems like there are probably men who have smoking wives.

Yes Danielle I do. He quit at about my 3 month point, then he started smoking agian and now smokes cigars. In the beginning it made it a real challenge for me many times , now it just really stinks. He only smokes outside and NEVER in my car.I still hope some day he will try again. We both quit twice before and I know this third time is a winner for me.

Members,

First off, your quit has to be your first priority. Protect it at all costs. Lead by example.

Second, talk to him. Try to find some middle ground together that will keep your children from being exposed to the harmful effects of smoking and you from temptation.

Many members have dealt with this issue and have gone on to have successful quits.

Some of them have had their husbands hide their cigarettes from them and agreed that the smoker of the household should take it outside or limit it to one enclosed room in the house.

If any members here have quit alongside a smoking spouse, please share your tips & experiences!
