Stages of Change

Hi Pete,

It's great to hear you are challenging yourself!  Vulnerability leads to creativity.
I'm interested to follow your progress and insights along the way.

I suppose right now I'm at the stage of action - beginning to find ways of looking outward again, and engaging with the world in a creative way, which I have not done consistently for ages, if ever. This newly-hatched Pete feels fragile and vulnerable at the moment, not yet fully trusting the possibilities.

Hopefully I won't fall off the tightrope, and soon will be busy maintaining.

Both of you make good points Eleveno and ~m. We do go in and out of the stages and it does depend on which goal you are working on.

I think the stage depends on the type of goal I have.

For example, in recovering from depression I am on the stage of action. That's what CBT is all about. When I finish the program I expect to be on the stage of maintenance.

Regarding other goals that I have I am in the stages of preparation and action.

Hi ~m,

First of all, just wanted to say it's good to hear from you! I agree, we go in and out of these various stages, for various reasons all of the time.

With regards to working through depressions, which stage would you say you're in?  How have you been doing?   I hope 2012 is treating you well!

Ashley, don't we go in and out of those stages all the time... in varying contexts? Or are you referring specifically to the stages of changing how we deal with depression?

People are sometimes ambivalent about changing, as there may be losses as well as gains.

Make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of changing, so you can, with a clear head, evaluate if you really want to change. Many people pass through a set of stages in the process of change:

Pre-contemplation, in which they aren’t thinking of change
Contemplation, in which they think of change in the next six months
Preparation, in which they plan change within the month
Action, speaks for itself,

Maintenance, in which they cope with errors in order to maintain their change

Which stage are you in? What's it like there? What advice would you give to others in lower stages?
