A little information is a dangerous thing.

Hi. That is pretty much what I do although I'm stable enough to absorb with out going off the deep end or going "Oh my God" At first some of the information was scary, when it wasn't depressing. Yes there are a lot of people with mental conditions and knowing why has limited use other than to teach patience and understanding. I bet you look at people different now. I find I have the urge to share but think few understand and more just want a fix. Either way :-) . One thing information has done for me has been to teach me why I need to do certain things to get better and why they have to be in order. You can't fix something if you don't know why it is broke. Everything else is a patch. I find patching leads to more patching instead of repairing.

With information it is often best to do it when it is going to make sense. And I still say when dealing with the internet, look for corroboration most of which I get from my friendly therapist who I haven't seen in a while. In fact as I got better she was the one that fed me information and encouraged me to pass it on and try to help others. Scary thing is that there are books that have it wrong or at best only half right. It is true that you have to have this to really understand it.

Anything I can help with just ask. Even if it is just the two of us interested.

Hi Davit,

You posted this last month but I see it didn't get a lot of replies and this is something I would like to talk about if anyone else does too.

I just did another post that mentions personality. My personality is curious and I do like to know how things work as you mentioned. I like to learn and I like to think.

In terms of getting better and getting rid of panic, knowing the mechanics of things did not translate to directly being able to just rid myself of panic. Information alone did not heal in that scenario and probably made some things worse. Yes I knew why things were happening but I didn't know how to fix them.

I ended up putting limits in regards to learning more and more information about certain topics. I think this freed up more energy and time for me to work with myself. Now I can go back to learning and taking in information but I still put limits on it and have habits regarding putting self care first, and my curiosity about the human mind second.

Hi Davit,

A very interesting post to ponder.  Thank you for sharing!

I'm sure you all have heard of this saying. In all things, guessing can lead you astray. Unless you can get corroboration the information you have could be wrong, even if it is by someone who claims to have the answers. Following the program will work and if you want additional information I personally advise you to wait till it does so you don't run all over looking for answers. I found that when you do start looking for the why and when and the other Ws that one little piece of information can lead to many more and it becomes mind boggling. No one needs the confusion at the beginning.
On the other hand, once you can handle it the workings of the mind are fascinating. It's subconscious ability puts any computer to shame. Every day it makes millions of decisions you are not aware of. Some of these may have led to this disorder and should be addressed. Most are harmless.
Thus said, additional information is not necessary for a cure. CBT in it's simplest form works. Additional information can actually add more phobias and triggers which is why I personally think a person should be ready before they jump in. Once in you are stuck with the effect. You can't easily get it out of memory.
You can drive a car without knowing how it actually works yet for some how it works is fascinating but adds little to your ability to drive. Same with the mind. For those of you who do the research, I hope you find it as fascinating as I do. Don't forget though that some of the information is out dated and not relevant anymore except as information on how not to do it. Some of the things done in the past to mental patients are down right scary and didn't work.
