Anxiety, when is it not healthy?

Hi Ashley,
I'm a worry wort and am overly concerned with details, so I  miss the big picture.  Getting help regularly is helping me make strides, and i've almost always had a good person as a resource broker to help me progress over many years.  Cbt helps since it's easy to see the results since the measurement of change is so easy to see, although other things have been stepping stones, probably valuable to this point.

Hi, I have agoraphobia. It first started with Panic disorder when they seemed to come out of the blue, and eventually, I was fearful of having them in public, so I've developed agoraphobia. It's been over 3 years since I've been able to drive myself anywhere and I have a difficult time being in cars. I can only be in the car with my support person; nobody else's driving. I finally started therapy last November and with the help of my therapist, I am learning other underlying causes to a lot of my problems. (My marriage, divorce, perfectionism, people pleasing tendency, lack of assertiveness, and lack of trust in people.) I'm not recovered yet but I feel good from all that I'm learning through my recovery process.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It helps one deal with a tense situation in the office, study harder for an exam, keep focused on an important speech. In general, it helps one cope. But when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it has become a disabling disorder.

There are many different types of anxiety disorders. Some of the most common ones are:

• Agoraphobia: extreme anticipatory fear that restricts one from leaving a "safe-zone."
• Panic Disorder:  seemingly spontaneous anxiety attacks at a disruptive frequency
• Generalized Anxiety Disorder:  jittery nerves all the time
• Specific Phobia:  debilitating fear of a specific object or situation
• Social Anxiety:  fear of being around other humans
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder:  ritualized behaviours or obsessions driven by anxious thought
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder:  anxiety  tied to a past traumatic experience

Tell us about the type of anxiety you are experiencing and what you have found helpful to cope with it.
