Welcome, Interesting handle. You don't actually mention if you are unhappy on medication. I was functional but unhappy. I much rather be off it and let the Chips (anxiety) fall where they will. I've been about 95% or better off it for years now.
Speaking of past, since it can not be relived and changed it is only good for information, taking what is good and discarding the rest. Not so easy with PTSD depending on how bad it is.
Your three goals are part of the program, just wrote in different ways. CBT is pretty much anything that you can do to change negative to positive in such a way that healthy anxiety does not accelerate into unhealthy panic.
I was rather hoping you would come here because I think anyone that spends that much time visiting has something to say.
PTSD aside I imagine Vietnam was quite the experience.

Hello Gerald:  Welcome to the site.  I saw your avatar and liked the craggy chiseled face.  My first husband is a Vietnam vet  discharged late 60s too.  He is doing well, Had some problems for awhile.  We have remained friends and still visit and help each other out whenever we can.
I hope you stay and study one of the best programs around, CBT.  I found reading past posts informative and inspirational too.  Hope to hear more from you.

Hi VavMerC,
Any one who has served the free world, is more than welcome here, or anywhere.

If you saw the movie Patton, were you disturbed by the treatment by G. Montgomery towards the man suffering from "battle fatigue"?.  I liked the movie, but am always upset with that scene, since it portrays institutionalized stigmas which are personally difficult to deal with daily.

Hello Gerald,
I want to say Welcome Home and welcome you to the site and support group..
My husband was in the service from 1965 to 1969 and did 3 tours in Vietnam..I am so glad you found your way here...
I am sure CBT would of helped him with the PTSD...I know it has helped me when no one or nothing else could or did..
I also read in the depression center which is one of the sister sites to this one and it has helped me a lot too.

Glad your here...

This is from HavMerC however I choose to be more open and submit my given name which is Gerald. I am somewhat a newer member of the group-joining apx. 3 weeks ago. I would like to state I firmly believe this site is wonderful and I have obtained very helpful thoughts and information from other members. Thank you! I am a Vietnam veteran and was discharged in 1968. I spent three and one half years in combat zones. Shortly before discharge I began experiencing PTSD.  I have been on meds off and on since my discharge. The positive side is because of the meds. I have been employed in very satisfying positions-the negative side I have had to live on medication. The veteran hospital has been of no help!!  I would like to sign off with a few positive thoughts that have helped me and my wish is that they may help someone else out there. #1 To a mentally healthy, sane way of life, deviating from my past teachings as I see fit to improve myself #2 To  take calculated risks and experiment with new strategies and opportunities #3 To actively pursue people, places, and situations that will help me in achieving happiness. If we do our homework everyday we become stronger!!!!!
