Medications that can worsen anxiety symptoms

These are medications that have anxiety as a direct result of how they work. But also in the hyper vigilant there are medications that indirectly cause anxiety just by how they make your body feel by drawing your focus to that feeling. Antibiotics can leave you feeling sick enough to do this. Pretty much any medication that makes your body feel less than normal can do this. It helps knowing this. It allows you to have a positive focus on what is happening.

My therapist says though that drugs that have anxiety as a direct side effect usually call for medication to handle the side effect while a person is on it.

Interestingly enough when pain killers are just not doing their thing anti anxiety and /or antidepressants are added. I know this from pain clinics. There is a connection here.

I agree, everyone should talk about the side effects with their Doctor. Some times they can switch you to something without them. If not, at least knowing what is supposed to be there helps.

Davit.

PS. Caffeine is added to medication to make it work better, I believe by making it more absorbable. If so taking it with coffee could make the side effects worse. Better to take it with a full glass of water.

Members,

Many medicines can cause anxiety or make anxiety worse. Discuss your medicines with your doctor if you think that a medicine may be adding to your anxiety.
Prescription medicines that may cause anxiety include:
•    Medications that contain amphetamines, such as Benzedrine, Dexedrine, and Ritalin.
•    Hormones, such as oral contraceptives and thyroid medications.
•    Steroids, such as cortisone, Hexadrol, and prednisone.
•    Respiratory medications, such as albuterol, salmeterol, and theophylline.
•    Other medications, such as phenytoin, levodopa, quinidine, and some antidepressants.

Nonprescription medications that may cause anxiety include:
•    Medications that contain caffeine, such as Anacin, Empirin, Excedrin, No-Doz, and cough medicines.
•    Decongestants, such as phenylephrine, including Sudafed PE.
•    Illegal drugs, such as cocaine, crack, or speed (amphetamines).
