I am practicing yoga for 2 months now and I have found it very useful. I am having 2 classes a week with an instructor and practice 3 mores times a week by myself at home

I tried yoga for a few weeks and found it to be very useful.  It teaches you how to calm yourself and let things go.  For that one hour class its just you, body and mind.  As well I found you could make the classes as challenging or easy as you want to.  Its not for everyone but I would encourage people to give it a try.

Yoga was great as a workout, but I found the evening classes stimulated me too much so I couldn't sleep.
My knees are really bad, but I might still try Tai Chi, even though I hear it is stressful.
I tried mindfulness meditation, but didn't find it helpful, although it was nice to be in social setting.  Progressive relaxation is best for me.

As I watch the sports seasons change, there are descriptions of how professional athletes use these, and other modalities to help themselves excel, so I've always had to remind myself that I'm in a similar game, but the opponent is an illness

Members,

Our focus in recent weeks has been on stress management. Yoga, meditation & Tai Chi are often recommended to relieve stress. Below you’ll find a list of potential benefits that you may gain as a result of engaging in such activities:

  • Yoga can help relieve asthma symptoms, respiratory problems, high blood pressure, pain, mental performance, mood, back problems, arthritis, libido, weight and anxiety.
  • Psychology Today reports that individual observed during and after meditation showed shifts of brain activity from right frontal cortex to the left frontal cortex. The right side of the frontal cortex is a part of the brain that becomes active when stress levels rise. The study also noted that after eight weeks of meditation the shift from right to left in the brains of participants became more permanent. In other words, participants moods were rated higher than at the beginning of the study. (Collin, A., Psychology Today, April 24, 2003.)
  • Tai Chi can help relieve osteoarthritis pain, joint pain & overall mobility, balance, muscle strength and mood.

Have any members here tried these relaxing activities? What was your experience?
