Thanks Sunny!
Not to change the thread of subject..But I like your new pic..

Everyone:

I just put up a new pic of the cup and saucer I used as a distraction on the exposure I was talking about in my previous post.
In fact I just had to have that cup and saucer as a reward and a memento of my success, so my partner bought it for me.
It is a reminder of how I was able to control and beat panic...

Way to go Red!  That's exactly what I do and sometimes use positive self-talk, just a phrase or two.  Sometimes use a bit of distraction if necessary, but it does pass and I always feel good afterward, confident that I can do anything.

Hi Josh,

I have one other thing to add and that the deep breathing helps me also..What I do is when I feel the anxiety starting to build into a panic and this can happen pretty fast for me, I take a few slow deep breath and thats helps calm me down enough that I can think rationally and then I use the 10 question list in my mind..That what I did while I was in the car for the last few block before I arrived at the relatives house to visit and it all went ok after that..I was also out shopping in a crowed small antique shop yesterday and I felt the anxiety building and thought I was going to have to bolt..When my partner said just ignore them, so I took a few deeps breaths and started to redirect my attention on a tea cup and some other antiques on the shelves in the store and it worked..The anxiety level dropped and then went away completely..It never turned into panic..I was able to stay in the store and enjoy myself..This is something I was not able to do a year ago..So I want to let you know to keep reading and working the program because it will get better..It just takes time.....

Josie,
What your answer tells me is that attacks aren't cut and dried, like any disease.  The road to a full blown attack may begin with some small ones, and triggers along the way.

Hi:  Gee, with an intro like that, I thought I'd better answer as best I can eh?  Yea, I'm Canadian. lol.  Well, for me what I do for anticipatory anxiety - and the others are right about it - if I know I will be in a situation which will cause anxiety - for me giving a speech even if it is short one - I review in my mind, a visualization, of the event, how I come in, greeting people, take my seat, giving the speech successfully and resuming my seat and feeling good about it.  Of course, I practice a little bit at home too first to make sure I know my subject matter.  All I am saying here is reviewing in your mind what it is you want to do and always do it successfully.  By the time you get to do it, the successful is stuck in your brain, no room for negative thought to get in.  Next, is the positive self-talk.  Always let yourself know that you are capable.
How about those relaxation exs.  I know I talk about them all the time, I truly believe in them.  So do a muscle relaxing ex. first, do the visualization next.  Do it every single day.  Sounds like a lot but it isn't.  There are many, many different relaxation ex. you can get on CD if you can't do it alone.  Soon, you will be able to make your own.  They say that hearing your own voice calming and soothing, practicing the ex. can be helpful to some.  I would also like to suggest choosing the same spot to practice these exs.  The reasoning behind this is that after much practice in the same chair say, when you go to sit there, the body anticipates that this is the relaxing place, a safe place and after your first 3 deep breaths which signals the body to start the relaxation process, it is almost automatic.  It can last for 5 minutes or 30 minutes if you wish.
When you get up in the morning and are thinking anticipatory thoughts, just tune them out, think of a positive thing you will be doing in the morning, even if it is just about the greatest cup of coffee you are about to make, or the best shower.  Anything positive.  Hope I've given you some helpful suggestions.  Keep the faith.

Hi Josh.

Anticipatory anxiety is such a pain, because we do it to ourselves. The answer to your questions is yes. And it gets progressively worse as you start to think that it is always going to happen. You have to break the cycle so you are not looking for it. There are exercises and techniques that Sunny knows better than me, I actually needed medication the odd time to break the cycle. But once broke I could reduce it to manageable and finally get rid of it.
I'm sure if she is reading she will answer better than I do.

Hi Josh,

I found session 3 of the program very helpful when it comes to dealing with Anticipatory attacks..There is a 10 questions list that you will get access to after you finish reading this session..I have used the list many times to challenge my anxious and negative thoughts..It is becoming more automatic now for my mind to turn to this list when I am feeling anticipatory anxiety..
I was in the car and on the way to visit relatives and my anxiety and anticipatory thoughts started up as usual but this time I was able to bring the 10 question list up out of my mind and challenge these negative thoughts and see them for what they are and replace them with positive thoughts...I walked in feeling confident and that the visit would go nicely and it did..
I still deal with anxiety in the morning a lot of the time but am now able to stop them in there tracks before they get out of control....
I have to say that reading through and working on the program has helped me understand what I am going through more than anything else and given me the tools I need to get better..These tools are invaluable when it comes to staying panic free and something I am very mindful of...
People come and people go in the support group but the tools you get and learn to use in the program here will last you a lifetime...

Josh,

This is the fear of something that has scared you in the past.  Moving and progressing through it will help you be in control.  By journaling you can prepare for this, you are keeping a record of your attacks and can look back on your triggers and learn from them.

Take the time to go through the program and learn how to progress through your day starting with positive thoughts.
