Having bruxism, I've been told that others can hear me grind my teeth.  If only I could bump too, I might be able to get a job dancing...but then I have two left feet

i Ella:  I used to have that annoying click.  One year, it just went away and never came back.  I hope your does that too.  My dentist told me it was nothing to worry about.

one side of my jaw has a constant click on it...the other side sometimes will but go back into alignment ..

i get like a really sore jaw/neck/back from being 'tense' all the time and not realising it..but i've learned to try to take notice of it and make adjustments but sometimes if im not paying attention i realise ive been clenching my jaw or tensing my shoulders for ages..

or even silly things like if im holding an umbrella--I realise ive been clenching it realllly hard..all stuff that i never really took notice of before examining my behaviours.

So at least being able to identify them is a good thing...i think!

Also - does anyone here ever have trouble with their jaw? i've found when i wake up the following day after being really stressed (like i was yesterday) sometimes my jaw goes out of alignment and gets 'clicky' - usually i can lie on my side and it eventually seems to get back in alignment, but today its so bad i can't move my jaw properly to eat.
Thankfully it doesn't happen all the time, but enough to be an issue. :(

Bolting food didn't help with swallowing food.  My stress was so high that I didn't think I had to slow my chewing, and swallowing might follow

that's exactly how I feel too--and yes I'm with you on the chewing things up really well..to make sure it doesn't get stuck

I do that all the time when im feeling the 'stuck' feeling. Well hopefully we will get there soon! It doesn't happen to me all the time but it's enough that as I said I will not eat anything without water or some kind of liquid near by....

The first time I had problems swallowing it was like that for a few days - I haven't had it as bad as that first time since then, but sometimes I get a sort of tightness in my throat as if someone is pressing on the outside of my throat - or like there's something there, and feels like i'd struggle to swallow things properly.

Oh I always have water with me too! i want it there to help if something gets 'stuck'.
I've had a couple of bad experiences swallowing things - meats etc - and at dinner my mum often has a bit of a coughing/smi-choking thing which doesn't help my fear of choking! so now i chew certain types of food (meats, long pasta) waaaay more than the average person to make sure it goes down right.
I hate the fact simple things like eating out with friends or co-workers can now make me anxious and can affect my throat etc- I've even avoided a couple of outings to avoid this (which i know i shouldn't do...)
I'm not yet at the stage where i can simply shrug the feelings off, although I hope one day i will - like back in the old days *sigh*

Hi Ella,

Your story sounds a lot like mine (and probably lot's of people's on here!) I was going to start a discussion to ask anyone about a 'swallowing' problem with anxiety because I don't often see or hear about it as one of the major symptoms..

I'm not sure if what you describe is the same as what I deal with but it's basically that (especially out for dinner in public) I will start to feel anxious and then i feel like i won't be able to swallow my food and i am going to choke. It happens sometimes just when I am normally trying to swallow--as if the reflex just 'isn't going to work' is what I think..

so whenever I am eating i HAVE to have water with me or I fear I will choke. Not sure if that is the same for you..but it's one of the things I really hope I can get a handle on!
