Anxious Thoughts - Fear Goggles

12 years ago 0 11213 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi MaryLouise,

The program will give you concrete tools on how to challenge your negative and anxious thoughts. Session three offers questions to ask yourself when you are feeling this way.

How do you think you would feel if you were able to control these anxious thoughts?

Hello
I too have multiple anxious thoughts and I can control them about half the time. Sometimes when I am frustrated with my ongoing mind talking I stop what I am doing and ask "what is going on, why am I anxious or thinking or panicy". This may help me just recognizing my current state and well sometimes (don't think I am weird) I actually scream and yell and swear, it can be very draining physically and emotionally. However I find it grounds my thoughts, feeling and anxiety for a time.

Debi,
I just resumed working on core beliefs too, and find it rewarding since, there is so much about myself that is buried because of my negativity.  Also, I isolate myself, since because of every imaginable fear, and my negative core beliefs.  It will slowly get better - I just wish for some sunlight!

How is your core belief work going?

I cant beleive how automatic thoughts are sometimes, i was driving to my dads on Saturday, (i have not driven there for ages and the last time i did i felt dizzy) but as i am treating all experiances as exposure i went for it, anyway i was quite confident when i left the house but as i was driving i was automaticlly thinking anxiously as if i was waiting for something to happen, i began to feel a little nervy but did remind myself that i was just overthinking things and that i was fine and i was almost there, anyway i got there had a great day and then drove home again in the pouring rain, i felt a bit better on the way back, my therepist and i are talking core beliefs at the moment and she is thinking my nerves when driving are based on the fact that i have had panic attacks in the past when driving.

I type pretty spontaneously unless I'm trying to make a point as clear as I can. I spell check and check punctuation and use too many commas if I think some one will read it wrong. Some times I add, some times I delete and some times I lose the whole thing. Been logged out a few times and had to start over. Some times My aircard (internet) disconnects on me. Some times I have to look something up or cross reference it. Once I start I don't usually ruminate on it. I might after though, wondering if I got it right. Still have that worry too much core to deal with.

Hi again, Hugs. No need for owing me anything!

As for your other concerns, I think it is pretty common for people to post spontaneously. My opinion on that is related to the number of times people, as you yourself mentioned, regret a post!

Change is hard and what you are feeling is normal! Even though our current practices or thoughts may not 'healthy', they are familiar and therefore can be somewhat comforting. I can relate and I'm sure other members can as well. Be patient, stay focused on what is best not what is comfortable, and soon you will have found a new home! You have many resources to your experience can serve you well! Reframe that in a positive light. This is work but you can do it!

Tiana,
Sorry - I composed  the post using Ashely's name...now I owe you two dances :(

Do most people post spontaneously, or draft responses, incubate and write...just curious?

HI Ashley,

I almost regretted sending that post! Thank you!

I’m too shy to ask you to “cyber dance”(and we’re probably not allowed to because you need a professional distance), so I wanted to add info on the topic again, which is more in my comfort zone.

Once I was asked if I could use the thought record  “online”, and I think the message was to wrestle with the thoughts spontaneously vs pen and paper. He had a great CV, and I’m lucky to have him for that short period.

I’m building a new core belief system, to  shore up those new core beliefs that I am worthy and lovable and strong. This business of tearing away the old and building new core beliefs is hard. I feel like I don’t have a home.   Anybody know that feeling?

What’s critical is our interpretations.    The goggles are a great caricature of the negative interpretations which harm us. Goggles are so concise too, and easy to remember.

There are good thoughts too, but they escape. My negative core beliefs of being unworthy & unlovable and helpless are stronger and  I can’t keep good stuff staying around so I can build a life...at least its taking forever.  Mia is so lucky to have so many resources at her young age.  Oh well.

The “thought” record should be renamed, since the misnomer is focusing on harmless thoughts, instead of the transformational interpretations which could result in new behaviours.   Reframing record, or something like that, would better reflect the purpose, since the purpose is to reframe our thoughts for healthy behaviours and warm and fuzzy emotions.

That’s my thoughtJ

This is one of my all-time favorite songs, Hugs! For sure a great one to block out negative thoughts- so uplifting- makes ya want to dance. Thanks for the fun suggestion!

I use a thought record to challenge the interpretation, and reframe the interpretation, to possibly have better behavioural outcomes. Yesterday, I sang the Jackson Five song “Blame it on the Boogie” just to fill my mind and crowd out negative stuff.

Singing crowds out thoughts since it’s hard to interrupt a catchy tune when you’re hooked. Repetition, like “fogging” in assertiveness training is a technique that helps with those nagging little thoughts. See Michael Jackson’s song “Blame it on Boogie” on Youtube...You can substitute "bad thought" for "boogie", if you like!

Don't blame it on sunshine
Don't blame it on moonlight
Don't blame it on good times
Blame it on the
bad thought

That nasty
bad thought bugs me
But somehow it has drugged me
Spellbound rhythm gets me
On my feet

I've changed my life completely
I've seen the lightning leave me
My baby just can't take
Her eyes off me

I just can't
I just can't
I just can't control my feet

This magic music grooves me
That dirty rhythm moves me
The devil's gotten to me
Through this dance

I'm full of funky fever
And fire burns inside me
Boogie's got me in a
Super trance
