Good morning Susan.

At least it is still morning here. There is a thing related to reflux Called GERD. which resembles reflux except that with it there is pain in the area of the breastbone, along with irritability and fatigue and six or more symptoms. Antacids give it some relief but wont cure it. It would increase anxiety so is worth ruling out or if you have it cure. What about ulcers, they can be very painful if they perforate. There is also a rare disease that causes pain in the stomach area but you never mentioned anemia so I don't think you have it. It is called G.A.V.E. for short. Panic can mimic almost any thing with heart attack being the most common, but you will see from the forums that people do get some very strange symptoms from their panic. If the doctors can't find a physical reason for your pain then it could very well be stress and that thank God is a lot easier to relieve than some physical problem. Josie is right Journaling will help find the cause and it will also reinforce the fact that you are not having a heart attack. If it is physical the program can help by reducing the anxiety that increases the blood flow to your stomach and irritates it. Along with a bland diet, no sugar or caffeine for a while should give you some relief. But remember, we are not Doctors, only a doctor can rule out the physical. Keep sharing we are here with you.

Susan,

The members have given some great suggestions, why not try some to see if they work for you.  Do cut back on the acidic intake and increase your water intake.  This will flush out any toxins and not add any acidity. Try reading through the program and start using a journal.  This may help you pinpoint a trigger you are overlooking.

Keep sharing with us.

Could this be a panic thing? I get this reflux thing to the point where I can't or don't want to eat. I have been known to put a few books under the legs at the head of the bed to elevate it a bit. Funny thing is that ginger mint tea makes it go away, so it can't be real reflux, but it sure feels like it. I also have some Cytoteck because I'm not giving up lasagne or any thing else I like, like clili or spaghetti sauce although I too have cut back the proportions and some of the ingredients. Question is if it can cause reflux, can it cause panic. Food for thought, no pun intended.

Evening all!

I too have noticed I have more acidity in my throat lately. Seems like I have heartburn more than normal. But I started paying attention to the things I ate/drank that caused it. Orange juice & anything with tomato sauce (which makes me REAL sad bcuz Im REALLY not trying to give up lasagna LOL) are my main sources. So I try to cut the intake down. And I cannot do the 2 pillow thing bcuz it causes me to wake up with a crick in my neck.

Hi sunny Hi lisa.

It amazes me how you can say all the things that I somehow forget to. Thank you for being there for our new member, I too used to get reflux and still have to sleep with my head up. Susan, if you can't get to a pharmacist you can find out what drugs don't go together at drugsdotcom and it includes foods also so if you ever question taking something you can look there, especially on the weekend or after hours. It's good assurance when the panic starts telling you that you made a mistake with your meds.

I also used to be in and out of the Emergency Room.  I would get so frustrated because the minute they heard that I suffered from Anxiety that was it!  I had and still sometimes have the extreme pain through my chest and back and my sides.  I was really scared at first because I have had Open-heart surgery when I was 4, so any kind of chest pain would completely send me into panic mode.  I finally started CBT through a counselor and it helped me so much.  I now joined this program which has helped even more.  The support is extremely great on here and the program helps you to re-train the way you think and react.  I will say that I have had some symptoms that before would put me in the hospital.  I am now aware that it is my anxiety and that I am not dying of some kind of disease.  When the panic starts, I have to constantly tell myself that I am not going to die from this.  I can't plan anything in the future when the panic strikes because I feel that I won't be there for it.  I am currently trying to get off of Xanax, but I can honestly say that Xanax changed my life for the better when my panic was at its worst.  I hope that you can find the support and reassurance that you need right now.  It is awesome to hear from people that have been through the same thing and Survived!!!!

Good luck,

Lisa

Hello Susan.

Welcome. Let me give you some assurance that you are not dying, nor do you have any horrible disease. If your Doctor cleared you then you are Ok. Panic can manifest itself in an untold number of ways as you will see from the forums. I think you should read them and you will see that you are not alone. You will also see that people do get better. There is a lot of information here. The program wont cure you before Christmas, but the relaxation tecniques will make it easier. If you follow the program you will get relief, A lot of relief, but it takes time and you have to work at it. If the doctor offered Medication, you should probably take it at least till the holliday season is over. There are people here who no longer have attacks, and there are people who still get them but there now of such short duration they don't count. And there are people who have learned coping skills to use while they work towards a cure. We are all different and how soon you get relief will depend on how bad you want it. During an attack nothing is real. Can your body make you feel this way? No! It can only contribute, but your mind can and it does by the use of negative thoughts and confusing thoughts. Explaining the ins and outs would take a lot of space and there are good books and web sites on it which you should read even if you find them disturbing. Remember you are not alone. Post here and some one will answer. There is help here. I find it interesting to read the posts and see just how far people have come and how they did it. So again Welcome and find time to do the program, it will help. Take it from a person who was probably worse than you are less than a year ago.

Peace
Davit.

Hi Susan:  Welcome to the program here....CBT is the best.  I hope you will give yourself the chance to try it, step by step.

As for the pains in your chest, it's great that you went to see the doctor.  Now that you know it is not your heart, you can start to relax a bit and figure out how to tame that tummy.  Your meds may take awhile to start working, so don't give up just yet.  I used to have a lot of acid reflux and it hurt right in the middle of my chest, (thinking of heart problems of course) but it was indigestion because of anxiety.  When your stomach is tied up in knots all the time you produce a lot of acid.  What I did which you may find helpful, is cut coffee to only two cups a day and not in the afternoon or evening, or none at all is even better, no raw veggies for awhile, no nuts which were hard to digest at that time and no orange juice, anything acidic did a number on my stomach.  It took a few wks. but it settled down.  I found the over the counter, Zantac quite good.  If you take it 1/2 hour before eating it helps a lot for acid reflux. Check with your doctor first though, to see if it can go with the meds you are taking.  The pharmacist can tell you if it's compatible with your meds.  Another thing, sleeping with two pillows instead of one, to keep your head, top of body elevated a bit, so acid stays in the stomach. It's not that comfortable at first, but you get used to it and it's helpful.  It might take awhile to calm everything though, but pls. don't give up.

Christmas is a busy time but if you eat only little amounts of food several times a day, it is more easily digested than three big meals a day.  At the big dinner, you'll be tempted to eat everything, but small amts.

My very best wishes to you.  Take it easy, a lot of the stuff we think is necessary for Christmas (decorating, baking, etc.) really isn't.  Maybe you can ask family members to help out too.  Good luck!

Hi Susan,

Welcome to our online support community and thank you for sharing your story with us. There are many people within this support group that share the same questions and concerns as you.  We are all a group of individuals who support each other.

If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests.  These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor.

We also have developed a Panic Program.  This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above.  Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead.

These tests may or may not be for you but they are "free".  If you have any question or concerns with our “TOOLS”, you can contact us at support@paniccenter.net.  We are the Support Specialist for The Panic Center and are open to any questions or concerns you may have.

Please continue to strive forward and lean on us for support.

Members, what tips do you have for Susan?
