Rebuilding Your Self-Esteem

Good morning Stephen:   I just had to write!  I really hear you on this one. My husband always told me this when I was hesitating over should I/shouldn't I situations such as you are about taking nursing or something for your future.  He would say "where will you be two years from now?  You'll still be two years older, but if you take the course you will have knowledge, a chance at a great job, and still be you".  So I usually grimace because I know it'll be hard work but have to admit it's true.  It was up to me to take that step.  Two years seems like a long time, but I'd rather have two years trying at something and who knows, you just might succeed.   Wouldn't that be an ego booster?  and if you don't, well, you have to give yourself a pat on the back because you tried, you didn't sit there vegging.  And you could always redo the parts you missed. Money may be tight right now, but just think you are investing in yourself and will be able to support yourself in the future.  Maybe you could think in smaller chunks of time so as not to be overwhelmed.  One semester at a time and maybe the college allows for a break between semesters?  You could save up some more...find out about payment plans, that sort of thing.  Good for you thinking ahead!  It's always scary for me when I start something new, sometimes mixed with genuine excitement and good thoughts, but negative thoughts pop up too.  Those neg. thoughts are the ones we do battle with because they are the ones which make us doubt ourselves and tremble at the mere thought of trying something new (out of our comfort zone) - just jump on 'em with positive thoughts.

I like this quote:  Our doubts are traitors which make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.

hope this helps ... pls. read my new success entry which I'm going to write about after this.  I want to share it with everyone to show how we can heal from anxiety disorders.

Thanks all for the encouraging words.  I'm feeling very much off the beam, have been since Saturday. While I didn't physically relapse and pick up, I think I  emotionally relapsed. I feel like I've been hungover for 2 days. Lot's to bring to my therapy session this week. I do get so much out of this program, and so appreciate the health educators and all the people who post here. This place has been a savior for me and I've only been here a month. I just posted a really crazy blog so if anybody is inclined to read the thoughts of a slightly off-centered person, have at it. Blogging has been the most beneficial thing I've done in a long time for my mental health.

Hi Stephen.

What a double whammy! To have to fight temptation and anxiety at the same time. Congratulations.

Congratulations Stephen on your sobriety - Happy 3rd Birthday.  I am not an alcoholic, however, I have been to AlAnon meetings which I found helped me a great deal to better understand and have gone to open AA meetings to support someone.  I have family and a couple of friends who are alcoholic. I have met some wonderful people from all walks of life.  Do you have a sponsor?  Does it help if you call him when you have that temptation?  I've heard from the group in my neighbourhood that if your sponsor is not available - especially when you most need him - there is an emergency temporary sponsor you can call, or even someone else in the program.  I've read the 12-step book and it is really great.  It can be used by anyone to better their life.  Is the Christmas season tough for you?  Around here they especially have meetings every day during the season because of anxiety it can cause.  I'm wishing you the very best and hang in there, keep posting whenever and whatever.  This is a great site for support and understanding.

Thanks for bringing this topic up Samantha. I am a recovering alcoholic and last night I had the strongest urge to drink in the 3 years I've been sober. I used to drown the anxiety with alcohol, which only fueled the anxiety more, but drinking was a temporary relief. I almost sought that relief again. I go to AA meetings regularly, work that program too and see a counselor. I just get tired of always being on the edge of what feels like insanity. I did wake up this morning very grateful I didn't drink last night. I wasn't really anxious yesterday which makes me a little scared that I might get the urge when I'm more anxious and I don't know if I'll be able to stave it off. I would love to hear from others who have similar issues.
I am so tired of fighting the constant cycle of anxiety/addiction/self esteem.

Members,

Has an illness, addiction or other left your self-esteem in the gutter? In the weeks to come, we will be exploring various strategies to help rebuild your self-esteem:

   ·         Make a list of all your successes and read it everyday.

    ·         Surround yourself with positive, supportive people. You are who you hang around with.

    ·         Pick a mantra and repeat to yourself every morning and in times of self-doubt

    ·         If you’re struggling in an academic or work-related situation, ask for help! Or do some research; attend a seminar or workshop to increase your competence.

    ·         Seek outside help like a counselor, support group or peer mentor.

Please add your thoughts on rebuilding your self-esteem! More tips to come next week!
