Hi Gene,

That's exactly my thought, people slavishly following something they don't seem to believe in.  They follow it more like a superstition then anything else.  Like they follow out of fear of what may happen, not what they believe will happen.  That isn't religion!  That's occultism.

That feels more like someone taking blatant advantage of another persons ignorance.  Church is meant for teaching vision, not talking blindly.  Not all churches, mosques, etc. are like this, though so many I have gone to feel like this.  So many feel...like they lack authenticity.  But this is personal opinion on particular places I've visited, and again, this in no way says them all.  Who knows, maybe my thought process on the matter is tragically off.  Or maybe I'm just a bit to personally involved in this one.

I do agree that personal convictions create each individuals' outlook, regardless of religion...though I also believe the path that said religion takes you on can alter, modify, even revolutionize the path your personal convictions can take.  They can help create confidence, or create insecurities when you believe you are for or against a power that you admit is greater then yourself.

I can be a bit contradictive, one of the downsides of enjoying both sides of an debate.

I guess, what I'm really getting at with all of this...is that you must believe in what your doing, and who your doing it for.  Gotta keep that PoP (Power of Perception) in check, lest you fall victim to someone else's PoS (Power of Suggestion)...this is your PoA (Power of Attitude).  Made myself a lil formula: PoP + PoS = PoA.

Hey Joe

You have obviously given this some serious thought. I like that. People slavishly follow the dictates of their ancestors without ever asking why. Whatever religion you end up following I feel it is important that you came to that conclusion by yourself.

Religion (or lack thereof) will play a major role on your coping mechanisms. People tend to resort to religion in times of hardship and naturally they seek assistance from an existential being. Whereas as you mention "spirituality" is more about the "I" and seeking your own redemption. But I think in the end that your confidence and attitude will determine your outlook regardless of your specific religion. Some atheists are totally happy with the idea that when they die they will be nothing but worm food. Whereas others might be terrified of dying because they will see it as the totally annihilation of their consciousness.

Go figure. Just goes to show the power of attitude.

What's funny Faryal, is in order to follow spirituality, you have to do it religiously.  Kinda cooky how everything connects, however frivolously.  All you gotta do is play with the words!

I do agree with spirituality and religion being different too, spirituality is more the big "I", whereas religion is a team sport.  It's like comparing psychology to sociology.

And religions do fundamentally work the same, though I believe the path they send you on isn't the same.  For instance, within Christianity alone, many Catholics pray through Mary (the holy mother) to speak to God.  Whereas protestants pray straight to God.  Simple sometimes subtle differences like this, can create vast differences in the way people are and how they believe things should be done in life.

Great discussion members!   I do believe however that there is a difference between religion and spirituality. One can be spiritual without being religious. And spirituality is what you define it to be for yourself..........a consciousness that connects you to the universe and the Creator.   All religions, at the end of the day, fundamentally teach the same things.   Interesting topic!     Faryal, Health Educator

And to think, after I posted I wanted to retract the, "I know exactly what your talking about" part, because I started second guessing myself.  Go figure!

Religion isn't so bad, it's just that when it comes to religion, some people (not all) tend to want to preach more then listen.  That or they only want to speak surrounding the subject they can relate to.  Break that barrier, and you've got yourself an interesting debate.  Lots of folks here like the scientific method, that still is one of the hardest debates, just because it attempts to tackle the untackleable...well, untackleable by what's known...but then again in that sense, is spiritual religion any different?

Religion seems like a battle between the will to win rather then anything else.  Maybe I'm debating the wrong people, or maybe it's me...I'll wait for the person who brings an epiphany to answer that one...
