Driving Alone

Same as jhori here - I love driving and I often want to go for a drive when I'm anxious because it calms me down, especially in the dark (or actually I should say I want to go for a "ride" because I am even more relaxed when my husband is driving and I'm being a passenger!). Middle of nowhere is great - I always want to get on a highway and just go. Sometimes wind up in the woods and just get out and smell the fresh air . . . such a help!

With DM on this one . Total avoidance . It was so much easier getting around the city when i lived there with buses but is very hard to here in Cornwall .

If i go anywhere its walking , bus or train . Feel like im too old now as well  .

Should have took my test years ago , had lessons many times and everytime they said i was ready i stopped .

Driving is one of my releases!  Mind you, I still have the whole social anxiety part I'm working on, which can come to play while driving...but sometimes a drive out to the middle of nowhere with no map is just what I need.  No focus, no fear, no thing but the tunes coming out my speakers and new scenery all around.

Driving is one big main thing for my anxiety.
I too need to work on this.

Anxiety about driving...hmmm... I think it's more avoidance now.

I don't even have my licence.  I've always said I was "green" and didn't need to.  Or because we lived in Vancouver with rapid transit etc. it was unnecessary.  Now that we live in the "burbs" with our two kids I need to overcome this and get to driving....  again though it's a small community and everything is in walking distance..school, grocery and most importantly starbucks.. lol.

It's on my list of things to do now.  I don't really experience panic and anxiety anymore but just the thought of it coming back while I'm driving with my kids or other peoples kids gives me shivers... Guess I should put my tools into place and take this on...

I'll keep you posted!

Members,

Do you struggle with anxiety? Today we will be looking at sample exposure plans to help you overcome your fears.

If you fear driving…

  • Sit outside and look at the car for 1 hour
  • Sit in a car outside alone with the engine off for 1 hour
  • Sit in a car outside alone with the engine on for ½ hours. (Do not do this in an enclosed space due to carbon monoxide poisoning.)
  • Sit in a car outside alone with the engine on for 1 hour. (Do not do this in an enclosed space due to carbon monoxide poisoning.)
  • At a quiet time drive around one block for one hour
  • Drive in a quiet residential neighbourhood for 1 hour
  • Drive in the same residential area at a busier time of day
  • Drive on a wider street during a quiet time of day for an hour
  • Repeat as above but make turns, change lanes & stop.
  • Drive on a wider street during a busier time of day for an hour.
  • Repeat as above but make turns, change lanes & stop.
  • Increase the amount of time and frequency of your driving gradually.

Is driving a fear of yours?
