Have to get back on track

Hi foxman,
Thanks for the advice today, and the last several years. I’m headed to my 2nd meeting tonight. There are a variety of meetings in my area. I am going to try several out and see which one works best for me.

J, everyone else cannot drink and function. The drinkers who I know don’t function properly when they drink. Ones I know who drink have to write off the next day to a hangover. Thanks not functioning, in my opinion.

I even went to first AA meeting recently. Foxman, it only took 4 years for you to convince me!

I am glad you were able to experience AA. You see we are not bad at all, just wacky. For more AA inclined forum you may join e-AA.org forum. Just create an id with Gus in it, we can connect. Powerlessness and Unmanageability could be a tricky. We may have to dig into the big book of AA to find true answer what those terms mean.

Anyways, I am glad you are willing to see what we do in the rooms. Hope you have variety of meeting formats where you live. I prefer literature based meetings so we could stay on topic.

Thank you. I have burned so many bridges and feel so embarassed. Everyone else can drink and function why can't I? I'm afraid I'm going to hurt myself or die

Hi J,
If your deeply ashamed and embarrassed, you can join my club. That’s exactly how I feel when I go back to alcohol. I know exactly how it makes you feel.

The first time I quit fully was spring 2015. I went 2 and a half years with no alcohol. Then some things in life happened. I turned to the bottle to ease my worries. Instead of easing my mind, it made everything worse. Mole hills turned into mountains. When I stop drinking, mountains become the mole hills they really are. Does that make sense?

J, I want to let you know that I had many attempts at quitting. I did finally figure out how to quit long term after many attempts. So if you have tried and you were not successful, it doesn’t mean you can’t be. Keep trying until you figure out what works for you. Podcasts about drinking (by Kevin OHara), an audiobook (called the Easy Way to Control Alcohol), and my doctor have all helped me quit. I even went to first AA meeting recently. Foxman, it only took 4 years for you to convince me!

Take care J. You can make it happen. Just keep searching for what works for you.

I just signed up. I can't stop. I went a week then drank for a week. Went for 2 weeks and drank for 2 weeks. It's all around me and I can't stop. I'm deeply ashamed and embarrassed .

Oh Gus!!!

I'm so glad you are back.  I've been away from this site, as well, and I'm sorry I didn't see you post earlier.  I've heard speakers in AA who have 8, 11, 13 years of sobriety and all of a sudden, they relapse.  It takes courage to get back on track, be honest like you have, dust yourself off and get back on the program.  Lord knows I relapsed too many times to count, but the key was I learned from each one.  I'll be looking forward to hearing from you on your progress.  HUGS

Gus,
Welcome back and thanks so much for your honesty and courage. It keeps us all on course to learn from other’s experiences. Thanks for sharing yours. You were my beacon ahead when I first quit and your strength helped me. I am here for you now. Hang in there and hoping to hear how things are going for  you my friend.

Welcome back Gus,

I think it is amazingly impressive that you were able to take accountability and make changes to quickly! Slips and relapses are very common and often considered a normal part of the process; so, I am glad you are learning from it and moving forward. Use all that you have learned from your successful two and a half year quit.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

Thanks for the great words of advice Foxman, as always!

I went through a very stressful situation with work last fall. I found it very overwhelming, and turned to drinking to with it. In hindsight, I should have known better. Drinking didn’t make me feel better. It made everything worse.

The one good thing to come out of this recent episode is that I know I can’t go back to drinking “a little.” Totally stoppping is the only way that works for me.

Thanks again. I’m going to check in daily to stay on track.
