What a great decision to have made and for all the right reasons.  I do hope you come back and post just how you are doing on your new path in life.  You are not alone on this walk.  Lots of us to join you and give you support.

It can be done and you will do it.

Yes, I would say you are ready to go.  I know its not easy, but with time and great commitment, you will find these feelings of regret turn to great joy.  Smoking for me was a self medication misery.  I could not let it go because I would not let it go.  I found cessation to be a very active pursuit.  In order to change we must be prepared for struggle, but no birth was ever accomplished without struggle.  And when you do quit you will indeed experience a rebirth.

Come here often, there are many kind souls here, who are walking an identical path to your own.  They will understand, and offer much comfort as you move forward...

stay well

Hey Freedom Fighter!!!

Welcome to the SSC and congrats on your decision to regain your freedom!  You CAN expect to be doing a bit of fighting for your freedom, but if you can maintain a Positive Mental Attitude throughout your journey, it helps to weaken the enemy!  If you can always keep the benefits of quitting right there in front of you, like that dangling carrot, you won't dwell on what you think you are having to "give up"!  That's the reason for the exercises like writing your list of reasons you are quitting.

You have planned well for this journey and yes, you can begin your quit at any time!  If not now, your quit date is fine!  Just continue to psych yourself up to the point where you are absolutely ready to kick that nico-demon's ash!  I quit using Chantix, and by golly on that 7th day I  WAS ready to go!!!

Continue to read and learn and let us know if you have any questions or concerns!  We're all rooting for you!!!

Hey FF,
There's never a really good time to start your quit, so why not go for it now while your motivation's high like you said!  And if you stumble, you still have the date you had picked out coming up. I think you can do it though. Your first post sounded like you were ready.
Hang in there, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Thank you all for the support, beginning to look forward to getting going and am wondering if actually I should just bite the bullet and get on with it whilst motivation is high?

My triggers are around stress, and possibly more accurately self pity....
And of course, alcohol and smoking go hand in hand for me, am ready for that one tho so it is more the instances that creep upon me unexpectedly that I expect to find difficult - traffic queues, for example, would be an occasion when frustration makes me light up!

I'm hoping and sharing will make it easier since others will be or will have been in a similar place

Hi Freedomfighter and Welcome...

Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking. Your cutting back now and planning ahead is really going to help you down the road with your quit.

I have quit for various lengths of time, the last time for 21 months. Last time I cut back then started out with the lozenges for a while then went cold turkey. This time I started out with the patch and am still very early in my quit right now. It seems that each quit is a little different, some harder some easier but the most important part is never giving up on the goal of getting quit and keeping your quit once you attain it. The first few days are the hardest but after that it gets a whole lot easier and stays that way as long as you never take another puff..

Post often....See you on the boards..

Welcome FreedomFighter!

It sounds like you really want this. Be sure to prepare as much as you can. This site has a ton of resources available to you. I encourage you to read the entire program and use the keyword search to find discussions  in the forums that pertain to you. Be sure to post often.. You are not alone in this.

What are a few of your triggers for smoking? How are you prepping for them?

Hi FreedomFighter,
It sounds like you are determined in wanting to quit, and that's the kind of attitude you need to do this. I see that you've got your meter running, and have went through the tools. If you know what to expect in your quit, it will be easier for you, so read read read.  There's a lot to read on this great website. There are a lot of good people here also that have went through what you are about to attempt, and know what you are to be dealing with. It might be tough, and if you're lucky it might not be that bad after all. I hope it's the later for you.

If you need to scream, we're here to listen, and if you need to weep, we'll lend a cyber shoulder to you.   I wish you well on your journey.
Hang in there buddy!

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

10 years ago 0 2 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hello all,

I have decided to quit after smoking for 32 years and reaching a 20 a day habit.
The decision is made and the date is set, but, in the build up, I am intending to delay the time I smoke my first cigarette, and limit the number of ciggies I smoke.
I am going to try Cold Turkey but will have patches available if it becomes overwhelming.

Obviously I want to live longer, don't want to die a horrible death that I am facilitating at great cost on a daily basis - that just doesn't add up!
And I want to enjoy just the simple things in life, without needing to stop and "exit stage left" whilst I nip out for a smoke.
The times I have made my OH pause the DVD, wait for pudding, put up with smoke blowing in his face, left him sitting at a restaurant table, alone at a function.......the list goes on -it must and will stop :)
I don't think it will be easy, so I am looking for a place to share the highs and lows, and to engage with others on the same journey.

Thank you for reading
