Hello Island,

Welcome to SHO.  As you can see, you can depend on members here to offer sincere and honest support through your quit.  It is important to plan ahead to have strategies on how to deal with cravings.  Read through the forums and work through the Program for ideas.  This will also help build your confidence and determination as you choose to live each day smoke free - you CAN do this!
We're here for you.

Thanks for the encouragement you guys.  It is perfect timing, Ashley.  And Jim that is very observant of you to notice that I didn't sound very sure of myself.  I actually was more confident when I was quitting with patch.  I was surprised when I got so far and then started bumming them here and there.  It undermined my confidence to some extent.  So you read that right.

Putting the patch on today and giving myself a pep talk.  Plus following the idea of the Reward Plan with very simple things, like taking out some time for myself every day or taking a photograph of something beautiful are the two daily things I listed that would be rewards that I would enjoy.  They make me appreciate life.  I'm a haiku poet and a Zen Buddhist so I like to stop and be present, observe very little things.  But I had to remind myself of that.  Simple things can make all the difference.  And a present focus helps in most situations.

Hey Island!!!

I also posted on the other thread, but I did have another observation to add.  We talked about maintaining that PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) and that is one thing that many here need to keep in mind, especially in the beginning.  I'd like to draw your attention to that sentence in your first post on this thread... "I'm pretty sure that I am going to quit this time."   Now, that's a pretty wishy-washy statement, isn't it???      I'd like to see a little bit more of that PMA I know is inside of you!  How about, "That's it!!!  I've had it with smoking!  I'm going to do what ever it takes to kick that demon's ash!!!"    That's PMA!!!

You really are doing great so far and we're all rooting for you!  Keep your eyes on the prize and you'll soon be thinking only about your continuing education and not the stinking demon!!!

             Jim

Sounds like perfect timing Island!

Good for you for taking taking the plunge. You have so many exciting changes coming your way and quitting smoking will only enhance that.

Thanks for all your kind responses.  I went through the material last night, and I found it very helpful.  I feel like I have an even better plan now than I did when I started.  And I put a patch on today.  As I said in another post, there's a lot of stress coming so I don't want to go back to smoking.

The reasons I've chosen now is because I'm making a lot of changes.  I'm about to move and start a doctoral program to become a psychotherapist.  I don't want to make this new start in life with old habits.  I've been trying to quit for a long time.  I hate the smell and the taste.  I hate the expense.  Plus I know how unhealthy it is, which is the main factor.

So because I move in less than 2 weeks which will be stressful, I started back on the lowest dose patch to help me get through and get settled in my new place.  School starts about two weeks later.  I hope that the new environment, plus my excitement about starting the program will help me stay motivated to quit so I can go off the patch without too much trouble.

Welcome Island!

You have come to the right place; we can help support you through this. Begin by reading through the program. The more information you can arm yourself with the better. Also, be sure to post and read often in the support group; we have an inspiring group here. Rewards are another important part of a quit. Plan to celebrate and reward yourself often - you deserve it!

What has motivated you to quit now?

Welcome Beth...Glad you found us..Congratulations on your decision to set a new quit date and have a go at it again..They say to never quit quitting and it seems to work for lots of us here. After many quit attempts I have been quit for 78 days now so as you can see it pays to never quit quitting..For me it is a ongoing learning process..
We are all learning how to quit and stay quit..

Good luck on your journey..

Hi Beth : )
You're already doing well!  It sounds like you're pretty serious about making it work this time.  Cutting down gradually helps a lot to figure out which cigs of the day you will really miss and stepping down from the patches seemed to work for you (almost!) So that's a good start.  Working On It is right; we all have our own history and find our own path to freedom from the NicoDemon.  But we all understand what you're going through and how much work, education and perseverance it takes to succeed.  So we can offer support, suggestions to ease your mind and of course Cheer for you Often as you work through this thing! NOPE works best for me! (Not One Puff Ever!)  Welcome to SSC!

Hi island,

Glad to see you here. I hope you stay a while, check out/ use the quitting tools, and read and post in the forums.  This place has been helpful for me, especially in terms of accountability. I also like the fact that hat the people here respect the fact that we each have our own path to quitting. The big point is that you quit, regardless of what methods and strategies you use. Regardless of where you end up getting your support, I wish you a successful quitting experience.

My name is Beth, and I live in California.  I've looked at other smoking cessation places and am trying out them to see which feels right.  My official quit date is July 1st, but I was working on it long before that, cutting back significantly, then to the step-downs with patches.  When I got down to the end of the patches, I found myself bumming smokes occasionally.  So I decided to set a new quit date and go cold turkey.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to quit this time.  Just need some support.
