The cravings are finally getting better!  I stepped down from a 10 to a 9 in my cravings diary!  And I faced a stressful appointment without feeling any cravings--at least until I got out and then I felt it.  But a cough drop on the way home got me through.  Thanks for all the encouragement and ideas!

Be kind to yourself in every way you can.  I am with impala regarding ice water.  I cannot lay out the physiology for you, but I know that it works wonders.  When I began I was never without a bottle of water.  Be patient with yourself.  This is a process.  The period of physical withdrawal can be measured, the half life of nicotine in the body is well known.  However, the half life of nicotine in the mind and soul is another matter.  I found that I had to teach myself not to smoke.  And I was a very slow student.

As you move forward you will begin to recognize when the cravings are at their highest level.  That is a very good time to put on your teacher's hat and try to understand why this is happening.   We all smoked for a reason.  I have yet to find the person who actually enjoyed smoking.  Let me be clearer on that.  What I mean is that we never actually enjoyed the act of smoking, what we enjoyed was the effect that smoking had on our state of being.  And for me that was key.  I had to find out why I was so driven to experience this thing over and over and over again (addictions are circular in nature).  Once you begin to recognize these learning opportunites you will be in position to begin employing coping mechanisms that will serve as spring boards to a more useful understanding of the why of the addiction. You have the answers.  As addicts we are, in effect,  both the jailer and the prisoner.  All we need do is find the courage to ask ourselves for the key.

Stay here and speak to the many folks who are wearing your shoes.  They understand and they will help you...

stay well

Hey Yalycer!!!

Welcome and congratulations on making it through Hell Week!!!  Keep that list of reasons for quitting handy and just look at it every time one of those hard cravings hit!  I found that walking the stairs and breathing deep and rhythmically with every step would chase the nico-demon away!  That and pretty much living on this site the first few months of my quit!  Reading old posts and contributing to my fellow quit buddies here in any small way that I could was a great distraction for me and was just what I needed!

Come here and read and learn further about this addiction and how to over come it!  There is a wealth of information here and quit buddies to listen and lend a hand!  You CAN do this!!

Yalycer, hang in there. The one thing we can promise is that it will get easier. Like Impalamania said, drink plenty of ice water. That will also loosen mucus. Breathe. Eat sugar-free candy, if you must.

Good for you!  Welcome to the Land of Quit.  You are off to a great start.  Keep the positive attitude.  Be prepared for the craves.  Lots of ice water, toothpicks and DEEP breaths did the trick for me.  You are well on your way.  Keep focused on your prize and enjoy the journey.
You can do this!

Thank you both!  I found when I was doing my exercises on this site that a big proud smile is my daily reward.  That's because when I was slowing down and got to 7 a day, I was so very happy and grinning from ear to ear, but when I actually got to the last day of smoking and the first day without a single cigarette, I didn't find it joyous at all.  So my smaller rewards are going to be to make myself smile.  I'm smiling now.

Yalcer, congrats on 8 smoke free days!  Just remember that these temporary inconveniences will yield a HUGE permanent improvment!  Have you put together a reward system?  A small reward for every passed craving a medium reward for each smoke free day, and a larger reward for each smoke free week.  I travel alot for work, so tomorrow I will reward myself for another smoke free week with a $2 pack of almonds from a Nuts 4 Nuts street vendor in NYC!  Just remember that smoking won't make stressful situations go away!  Post as often as you need, if only to vent, as somebody is always near by!  We're all rooting for your success!
