New Non-Smoker

17 years ago 0 13 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
mlk, Congrats on your quit. Thanks for the "you can do it" cheer! I believe this time I CAN do it and yes I am using Chantix. I am on Day 6 and quit day 2. I quit earlier than recommended but only because it tastes so bad. YUK. I have never been able to go more than a day without a cigarette even when I used the patches. But this time it looks good. I've never tried a support group either so this is new, also. Thanks again. Hi Tigger37, congratulations on making it to day 2 of being a non-smoker! I still struggle each day, but I think it gets a little easier. I really didn't think I would make it through just 1 day, so I'm feeling pretty good! Did you quit cold turkey or are you using NRT or medication? I am using Chantix and I believe it really helps. I applaud you for quitting knowing that you would be around a smoker, that has to be hard. My husband quit 8 years ago cold turkey while I was still smoking, so I know it can be done. He smoked up to 4 packs a day sometimes. This support group has been great, just reading gives me a boost. Good luck and yes, you can do it! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 4 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 148 Amount Saved: $24 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 12 Mins: 35 Seconds: 8

I, too, am a new non-smoker. I am on day 2 of my quit. I too am having the urge to smoke, however, it's not quite so bad when my husband isn't home. He is a heavy smoker and luckily we stopped smoking in the house and cars several years ago, for the children's sake. So I can have a smoke free environment while he goes outside to smoke. But it is in the back of my mind that he is out there puffing away and the urge hits. I have to get up and get busy doing something. Sometimes it helps just to go outside, hold an unlit cig. just to get passed it. I don't have this huge support system, but I do have a 14 year old daughter that really keeps me going and gives me some support and I have an 18month old daughter that I can look at and remember why I am doing this. "I can do this, I can" I'm just glad that there is an online support system so I can at least vent if I need to. Thanks for the welcome and wishes everyone, I appreciate it. I am on Day 5, but I continue to think about cigarettes. The cravings are there, but so far I have not let them beat me. There are times I find myself saying "I really enjoyed smoking", almost like I am questioning why I quit. I know why I quit and why I want to remain smoke free, but it is an ongoing battle. What saves me is that I don't have any in the house and would have to make an effort to get them. Also, I had not smoked in my house since my husband quit 8 years ago, so it was always a conscious effort to smoke. I had to get up and go outside. This has saved me, I make myself continue what I am doing and fight the urge to go outside. I imagine it must be much harder for people who have smoked in their house, or for those in Europe who can smoke everywhere they go. My friend from Germany hated that she couldn't smoke in restaurants over here. Sorry, I'm rambling, and the urge has passed, so Thanks for listening! I also wanted to say that I think it so great seeing everyone's Quit Meter and how many days of life have been gained by quitting. I am still on just hours, but I can't wait to see my days start adding up! Hi MLK and Welcome, I'm glad to hear you have a family support and all of non smokers here!! At times I think maybe one drag it won't hurt.. It won't when I'm dead. It isn't worth it and you should be so proud of yourself making it through the first worst days. I smoked between 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day for 26 years and I feel better today than I have in a long time. I look forward to when flowers bloom and can smell them for how they really should smell. It's incredible!! Keep breathing through the cravings it will pass, and keep posting!!! Good wishes to you from Bonnie Scotland. I am always amazed when I see the price of cigarettes quoted by my American cousins. I paid....wait for it......$7.50 per 20!!! That's $75.00 per carton. How stupid are your British cousins? I was smoking 200 per week and I liked smoking. Tomorrow is the end of week 8. That's 56 days. I am still craving. Not all the time and not all at the same intensity. I am so indebted to this site because there was many a day when I would have caved if I had not run to the support you get here. Watch your meter climb....it's a great incentive. If you get a bad day...just say "this too will pass, with each victory it gets easier" Good Luck! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/31/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 54 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,633 Amount Saved: 405 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 2 Mins: 22 Seconds: 10

Hi Alohakeia and congratulations on your 4th day of being smoke free. Glad to know someone is walking right beside me as I try to make it to day 5! That little voice is really annoying, but not as annoying as realizing how much of my life was taken over by smoking. I have more time on my hands and if I can just occupy my time doing fun things, or things I should have been doing, I will be fine. I just got off the phone with a friend and I felt bad that all I did was talk about me not smoking and what I have been going through. I find that I do this alot and wonder if I am not being fair to my friends. My friends are very supportive, but I feel as if I am almost obsessive about it. Does anyone else feel like they talk alot about their non-smoking status or is it just me? Is this healthy? I didn't think I would make it through one day without cigarettes so I am somewhat proud of what I have done so far! Alohakeia, if you haven't done so already, be sure to go through the online quit program, it was great. I was amazed at how much money I will be saving in 6 months. That alone is real motivation. Good Luck to us all! Hi mlk...looks like we're at about the same place...on our fourth day and using Chantix. I'll be following your progress..nice to know someone else is experiencing some of the same things I am..the "little voice" that says...just one puff wouldn't be so bad. I like the slogan here Not One Puff Ever. Sure are going to be some changes in routine though. Good luck to you! Welcome to SSC, Mlk! And welcome to the next great chapter in your life! You're on day four already? Well... you're pretty much through the physical withdrawal, so now comes the fun part; getting your brain to recognise and accept the 'new you'! :) I think it's great that you have a support system going in your life, and that you've decided to reinforce that online. You just can't have "too much" support and encouragement when you're tackling an addiction like smoking! It's all good! We're here for you, and we hope that you'll be here for us. We're definately stronger together! Again...welcome!! Thank you Danielle for your encouragement. I have done the online quit program and found it to be very helpful. I was amazed at the amount of money I would save in 6 months and do intend to reward myself. I was rewarded last night when my son said he was proud of me. My husband is also very supportive. My husband quit 8 years ago cold turkey after smoking more than 3 packs a day for 35 years. I sometimes feel guilty complaining to him about wanting a cigarette since he went through much worse, but he always asks how I am doing. It is by far one of the hardest things I have ever tried to do. Thanks again for your support.
