Hi Beefree, Although I can't add much to the advice you've already gotten I will however tell you how I got through my first 3 days. I LOVE COFFEE so this was a pretty tough hurdle to overcome. Except I never used to eat a proper b/fast just coffee + cigs. So each a.m I still had coffee - only this time I had an egg, toast or bacon sarnie instead of a cig. This immediately broke the association of cigs = coffee. Karen x

Hi Beefree, Hope you make it back to read this post. I saw a couple of your replys on other pages and wanted to welcome you and encourage you to stick around here. I felt very much like you do just a short while ago. You should know there is much hope. You are not alone, as many of us here have been through what you are experiencing. There are many wise and wonderful people here who will help you find your way. Play with that computer of yours until you figure the techy stuff out. Do whatever it takes to learn and then just post to your hearts content, ask questions, use all the tools on the left hand side of this page and read, read, read. Best wishes, Pat :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/28/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Hello Beefree, happy to see back! You've gotten some very good advice from really smart successful quitters already. I can't add much, but I can try to help from my newbie perspective. The tools on the left are very important, but just the beginning of your journey to freedom from nicotine. The first step to quitting, in my opinion, is to acknowledge that we are addicts. Then and only then, can we be ready to learn how to quit. It is worth the time and energy it takes to overcome this addiction. The more you learn, the easier it becomes to just say no to smoking. You will not regret spending time to learn, as your knowledge will erase your fears and then you can free yourself. No one has a magic button to push for you, but it's right under your very own fingers if you take the time to really look for it. Today is my very first full day of being a dedicated non smoker! I feel wonderful and I'm not worried about the short withdrawl time I will go through (so far nothing to speak of) because I am happy to be free. We all have to work for this, but it is worth the effort. I was lucky to find SSC, as the people here gave me tips to information I needed to find and I had my AH HA, wakeup moments early. Might I suggest you find a copy of the Easyway to Quit Smoking, as there may be something worthwhile inside it for you to understand about yourself. We each find our own personal pathway to quitting, and only succeed if our desire to quit is stronger than our desire to remain addicted to nicotine. That desire with a bit of knowledge and a positive mindset with a plan in place is all you really need. For me, I needed those 4 things to quit for good. Keep searching and you will also find your way. Keep close to this site and when youre ready well all be here to support you. Pat Proud quitter, not trying, not dying. N.O.P.E. Beefree, Change your morning routine. Break the association you have with cigarettes. Instead of reaching for coffee and cigarettes, how about you have a small breakfast with your coffee and read the paper? Keep persevering! Danielle ________________________ The SSC Support Team

Welcome, Beefree! You've got a lot of good advice already... but I thought I'd tell you what I did, coffeewise, during the first couple months: I switched from coffee to tea. It changed the routine in the morning. I spent time boiling water and steeping tea, instead of grabbing that first cup of Java and heading for the pack. Once I had broken the routine long enough, that I no longer associated coffee with smoking, I was able to go back to coffee. I also learned that I love teas. I actually spent money that I was saving on cigarettes to educate myself about coffee and teas... as well as buying good green teas and learning to roast my own coffee beans. I now have a new passion for my old friend, coffee, as well as a new friend, tea, to remind me of a different way stopping smoking could be an asset. Good Luck on the Journey! Beefree....why don't you take your coffee to a different location tomorrow morning. And put off having that cig as long as you can. Practice not smoking. It is really weird but you will see a change. Many folks can just jump right in and quit for good with no assistance. I myself did so much work by reading and doing the assignments on the left, I read about addiction because that is what I am-a nicotine addict-, also start a quit diary. That seems to be the place I like to scream the best. Oh and last but certainly the most important...you gotta have attitude.
