Supernova, Was it something specific that caused the "slip up"? Do you have a strategy in place if that thing happens again? Preparation is a big part of quitting and it's good to have things to fall back on when our thinking gets crazy. If you haven't already, take some time to do the online quit program on the left. It will help to see some things we can overlook. Also, try to get excited about the benefits of not smoking rather than looking at it as something you "have" to do. Sounds more like a chore than an adventure! Do you have a list of reasons why you want to quit or why you hate smoking? It may seem silly but writing it down makes it seem more real. Then you can kind of check your progress along the way. You can do it - one day at a time :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 956 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 19,135 Amount Saved: $4302 Life Gained: Days: 73 Hrs: 18 Mins: 39 Seconds: 19

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Oh Supernova, you have got to be my special quit buddy. Smoking and coughing to the point of blacking out is my hallmark, my signature. It is the reason I quit because I did it almost every day sometimes several times on one day. I would light a cig, take a puff, cough so hard it felt like it was coming up from my ankles, put the cig out, and in two minutes, light up to do the whole thing over again. I felt really, really, REALLY stupid. I mean, what kind of an idiot would do that to themselves, over and over. I burned through 2 1/2 packs or more a day like that. I had a constant pain in my upper chest whether from the smoke or from the strain of coughing I don't know but it did go away in a couple of days. Don't try to quit this time, just quit. It will be much easier on you if you do. I'm here, and I have had just what you describe happen to me. Don't worry about it, Supernova. You're back here and ready to take another shot at this. And if you truly want this time to be 'the' time... it will be. You've brought something every important to mind for me, and that is... as hard as it sometimes is to quit smoking, to find a new life as a non-smoker, it's still a lot less difficult then dealing with all the crap that smoking puts you through. Compared to all the pain and worry that being a smoker has caused me, especially in the last 15 years or so, quitting is a cake-walk. And what pain there is... is pain for something worthwhile... not the pain of destroying ourselves. Welcome back, Bud. We're ready when you are! I slipped up on Friday and boy did I pay a price Friday night. Went to dinner with the family, sitting there talking and laughing. I started coughing....hard. You know the kind of cough where you cannot catch a breath? Sitting right there at the table, I blacked out!! I can remember everything, even my wife asking me if I was alright! I HAVE TO QUIT DOING THIS TO MYSELF!!!! What is wrong with a person when he knows what he is doing is going to hurt him and he does it anyway? Addiction! That is what it is! I have to stop and I have to stop NOW!! So, here I am again, trying to quit again. I feel horrible.

Supernova Stay strong, each of us knows how hard this can be. Start your quit again, get yourself ready with the gum, candy, stir sticks anything that will help when you have a crave. I have heard that suckers work well. You can do this! We all have faith in you. Keep coming back here, there is so much help here, even if all you do is vent, it helps. Good luck and we are behind you all the way! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 18 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 461 Amount Saved: $90 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 22 Mins: 59 Seconds: 59

Dear Supernova - Rather than wasting energy on feeling horrible, take that precious energy of yours and invest it into changing trying to DOING! Trying goes nowhere in the Quit process, my friend. Most important also- spend some serious time here reading and reading and reading more - especially old posts. Those who went before us took the time to share their journeys, their wins and their challenges, so that you and I could learn without making those same mistakes. Read, my friend. When I first quit, I spent days and nights here - every spare moment, reading, sharing, venting, crying, reaching out for help and lending a hand... that process is so healing, for you and for all of us... Find some old-timers here who speak to YOUR soul... I followed Lady and Shevie all over the place here, hanging onto their words of wisdom and their strength! YOU do the same... So stay close to this site, get to know the addiction you are fighting, and find out by reading posts how to win this fight. NO more trying, my friend. Time to DO!!! ~ Healer My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 379 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,283 Amount Saved: $1762.35 Life Gained: Days: 49 Hrs: 15 Mins: 8 Seconds: 45

It can be made so much easier for you by making a happy choice to stop smoking.... Don't look at Friday as anything other than a reminder. A reminder that YOU are wanting to not smoke!!!!!!
