Tension

I wish I could ask him to read about depression. I feel as though his concern is mainly how it affects his life. I wish it was different, but I just don't think I can get him to understand. It's different when you talk with your girl friends...the women I know well seem to understand where I'm coming from better. He and I are so compatible in so many ways because we are complete opposites, but there are times when this also causes big problems. Thanks for your support. Super Girl

Hi Super Girl,

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing tension with your family. Family stress can be a big trigger for many. You are absolutely right, when we are struggling with depression it can take all our energy to challenge thoughts and do basic tasks. Please try to give yourself some self-compassion - just posting here and trying to work on your thoughts is a big achievement when we are feeling down.

Are you able to identify the thoughts that are feeding the negative feelings? If so, can you also identify any cognitive distortions or alternative thoughts? Perhaps if you start to slowly work on it hear we can help?

Could you ask him to at least read the first lesson here on what depression is?  It was very hard to get my husband to read anything about my "condition," but once he finally started to learn more about everything I'm dealing with... he was much more understanding.  I still have to remind him sometimes of what I'm going through... but things are better when I do help him to remember.  I'm a very high functioning depressive.... so he doesn't really remember on his own how hard I have to work to "be normal."  I hope this helps.  I hope your dear hubby is willing to learn. ~m

I'm experiencing a lot of tension with my family. When I have a hard time motivating myself to even shower in the morning, a lot of the other daily chores fall by the wayside. I know that my husbands resents me for this and thinks that I'm lazy. I just don't know how to explain to him that it takes all of my energy sometimes to deal with my intrusive thoughts - especially the violent ones. To him this is an excuse and something I need to just get over. I feel like his philosophy is just pull yourself together and soldier on. I hate feeling this way because I start to view myself as a failure and get into that negative spiral again. I wish that I could just shake it off but depression doesn't work that way. If anyone has advice I'd love to hear it! Super Girl
