What thoughts are holding you back?

Hi cobehale,

It's great that you recognize the hurtful self-talk.  How are you challenging those thoughts?

I stop and remind myself of how far I have come this year, how much better my relationship is with my husband (most of the time .  I remind myself it is a journey and can't be rushed and as long as I am always trying I can't fail.

When I am tempted to not take my meds I remind myself that my husband can always tell when I have missed a dose - my temper is quicker, I am moodier and more withdrawn, and therefore I still need them - I have to listen to my body.

I am just going to fail again.  I will never get better.

I have to challenge these two thoughts on an almost daily basis.  Everytime I take my meds I have to have a little mental pep talk with myself.

I'm booked solid till May, between work, Dr's appointments and social engagements. I would love to lay down and sleep for a week, never going to happen, but it's a nice thought. I have all kinds of fun positive things happening, I have too many things going on. I still haven't heard the end of the last time I opted out on something (My baby sisters baby shower), now my dad and his wife are all twisted out of shape, my sister is upset I didn't go. She had the baby last week, I haven't gone to see him (I have 2 kids in grade school, baby's don't have immune systems for 6 weeks, I would be beside my self if I got him sick), and I'm a jerk that just doesn't care about my family. Just need everything to stop for a bit so I can catch up.

Thoughts I'm working on - If I don't do it, it won't get done. Nothing I do will be enough. Everything I thought was certain or concrete is crumbling around me.

We can’t stress the importance of participating in pleasurable activities. Instead of sitting in your sadness push yourself to become more involved in your life.  Start out by challenging these negative thoughts:

- I can’t enjoy anything when I’m alone.
- There’s no point in doing anything because I failed at something important to me (eg. didn’t get the job, relationship broke-up).
- Since I’m not rich, successful or famous, I can’t really enjoy things
- I can’t enjoy things unless I’m the centre of attention.
- Things won’t be particularly satisfying unless I can do them perfectly (or successfully).

All of these attitudes will contribute to less enjoyment in life. Set up a schedule that will help you enjoy pleasurable activities – whether it be by yourself or with friends or family.
What thoughts are holding you back?
