I worked as a rehab counselor, which meant I worked with people with disabilities (physical and mental). I went with to this conference and they gave out buttons that said "Attitude is the real disability". It meant one thing to me then (pre-depression). I interpreted it as meaning if people learned and knew about people with disabilities and didn't have an "attitude" toward them, they'd be more accepted, etc. Today, I still feel that way, but also realize it can be interpreted as my attitude (my thinking) can worsen the symptoms of my depression.
However, having worked with people with depression and other mental disorders and now having experienced it first hand, I wish more people would take the time to learn enough about it to know that it is a chemical issue and not a "personality issue" or a choice.
I'll take comments on my comments. Attitude is the real disability!
Myth: Depression results from a personality weakness or character flaw, and people who are depressed could just snap out of it if they tried hard enough.
Fact: Depression has nothing to do with being lazy or weak. It results from changes in brain chemistry or brain function, and medication and/or psychotherapy often help people to recover.
