What is Social Anxiety?

Whoa sunny!

You are a very interesting writer.  Thank you for sharing that with us.  What you are saying is so true. Even if it is just talking with someone. That gift of being social you give that person could be greatly appreciated.

Even if you seem flustered, imagine another person who is anxious about speaking sees you.  They may think, "well if they keep trying then I can do it".... or "they look nervous and no one seems to mind".

Keep posting sunny! Love reading from you!

Summer is on its way!

Members,
As the summer approaches and the warm weather arrives your focus and attention may get thrown off a little. This can disrupt your professional and personal life dramatically. Routines can be lost and your goals can be forgotten. It’s important to prepare yourself for the changes ahead to ease the transition.

Continue to work on your weekly sessions, practice exposure exercises and have some coping strategies ready for all times. Don’t let a change in routine catch you off guard.

having panic attacks at night/ear;y morning

Florabee,

Death is scary to think about for anyone. It is not enough to say just try not to think about it, I know.  Although you will never like the idea of dying you will be able to come to terms with it.  You will have to do some soul searching and perhaps look into your religion.  For most people the main fear of death is the unknown.  But have faith in knowing that perhaps we are not meant to know.

Some thoughts I have heard worked for others is realizing that yes death is inevitable and part of the "plan".  Everyone dies and a place where everyone goes can't be that bad, can it?  Some people view their heaven or after life, depending on their religion, as a place where everyone is, a place of harmony and balance, a more natural state in a sense.  Many religions believe this living world is sort of a training ground, just a step in our journey. To many, life is just the beginning.

Personally, there is a quote that has a lot of meaning for me but you can understand it or disregard it; Alberta Einstein once said energy doesn't die it just changes forms.  How I understand that is we are energy; therefore we cannot die we will just change to another form. If you really think about it a natural life and a natural death can be beautiful.  We are all part of this world and the world has a plan for us.  We shouldn't be scared because it is natural and has a purpose.

Try to think of every day as a precious gift. Enjoy each day to the fullest.  We only have a short time on this earth.   Who knows what we will enjoy in the next life but for now appreciate this world.

Others, how do you come to terms with the idea of death?  Be as elaborate as you would like.  All religious and personal explanations are welcome.

Effects of Massage Therapy on Stress

Members,

Our focus in recent weeks has been on stress management. The positive effects of massage therapy have been widely studied in children, adults & older adults. The listed benefits from head to toe include:

°          Decreased incidence of headaches related to tension.

°          Improved mood, decreased anxiety. Children with autism showed a decrease in problem behaviors.

°          Improved circulation & decreased blood pressure. In surgical patients, faster healing & recovery rates were noted.

°          Better posture, decrease muscle tension, joint pain, range of motion. In pregnant women it helps alleviate discomfort.

°          Better sleeping patterns in babies, children & adults.

Have any members found this therapy beneficial?

Hello

Welcome Lone Ranger,

Thank you for sharing your story and support with us. There are many people within this support group that share the same questions and concerns as you.  We are all a group of individuals who support each other.

If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests.  These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor.

We also have developed a Panic Program.  This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above.  Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead.

Pleas continue to strive forward and lean on us for support.

worried about going to jury duty

Hi Lee,

This will be a great opportunity for challenging yourself.  Have you talked to your doctor or counselor about July 14th?

First of all visualization works wonders.  Every night before you go to bed imagine yourself in the court room.  Imagine yourself being calm and relaxed watching the proceedings. If you feel anxious while doing this try deep abdominal breathing.  If necessary imagine yourself in a calm place (where ever you feel safe and at home) When ready try visualizing yourself in the courtroom again.

When in the courtroom what Don suggested is great.  Try to focus on other things. Also, do abdominal breathing, in other words, breath with your belly and not your chest. Lastly, whenever you think of it try to tense and relax every muscle in your body.  Slowly work your way down your body. Don't worry nobody will be able to see that you are doing this.  The muscle tightening and relaxing along with the abdominal breathing will relax your body.  It is hard to have an anxious mind when your body is relaxed.

You can do this Lee! We know you can.

Happy Canada Day!

Hi Members,
Happy Canada Day!

On July 1, 1867 the constitutional act created ‘one Dominion under the name of Canada’.

Any tips on celebrating in a healthy way?
