My thoughts

Those are some great tips members.........thank you for sharing!   Feeling like you are still in control is the single-most critical factor in keeping the anxiety and panic at bay. It's great to see that some of these techniques do help and are empowering.   Keep up the great work! Faryal, Health Educator

Lousy Day

Hi CM,   I would like to second the comments made by Diva with respect to all your successes to date. Given all the challenging situations and feelings, you really have come a long way and I hope you are acknowledging these successes and accomplishments for yourself.   The anger and frustration you experience daily is understandable. But is there some way you can force yourself to have a positive thought each morning on the streetcar? When you feel angry at others for being able to go to work, perhaps you could flip that emotion into gratitude............feeling grateful that you have the opportunity to do the re-integration program and that you are not stuck in a job you hate like so many people out there. Just a thought............   Hope this week is better for you!     Faryal, Health Educator

Activities That Can Give You a Sense of Accomplishment

Activities That Can Give You a Sense of Accomplishment

Some people make a distinction between activities that bring pleasure and activities that give a sense of accomplishment. Some activities are performed for pure pleasure such as going to a movie, taking a bubble bath, wiggling toes in the sand or basking in the sun. Other activities aren’t so pleasant to do but when you finish them you feel good because you get a sense of accomplishment or control over a situation.

For example, cleaning the kitchen floor or tidying up a closet may not be exactly “fun,” but you can feel “good” or “better” after having done a small job because you can feel like you have accomplished something.

Over the next several weeks we are going to ask you to do some experimenting by doing things that may provide a sense of pleasure or accomplishment. Again, all we ask is that you try it and see what happens.

If you’re having some trouble coming up with some activities that will give you a sense of accomplishment, here’s a list that will get you started:

Donating to a good cause
Passing a test Planning a trip or vacation Making a piece of Art Redecorating Rearranging furniture Learning something new Learning how to fix something Doing the dishes Writing something well Saying something well Making other people happy

Diva news...

Hi Diva,   You do sound quite panicked and terrified in your last post.  There is a lot going on in your life so it's no wonder you feel this way.   You deserve a huge congratulations for your upcoming graduation and making the dean's list.........that is truly remarkable! You must be really proud of yourself. Although the idea of walking up in front of a crowd to accept your diploma is frightening, perhaps if you visualize yourself in this predicament it may make it easier? What about taking an anti-anxiety medication just for those couple of hours to help you get through?   Lack of sleep is definitely problematic. Have you tried deep breathing or listening to calming music?   Hope you have a better day today!     Faryal, Health Educator

do i have depression

Hello Karla,   Welcome to our wonderful support community. You have reached a great place for advice, support, comfort and information. Please feel free to post as often as you need to.   The feelings you describe do sound like panic disorder and depression. Have you seen a health professional about these concerns?  Are you taking any medications or supplements or receiving any therapy?   Please review the program and the tools available to you. As you work through the sessions you will discover many things about yourself and your thought patterns.   Again, please also do consult a doctor for the symptoms you have described.   Good luck and keep us posted!     Faryal, Health Educator
