Is this normal?

Well the unavoidable situation quickly became avoidable. 3 days into the job i found out the hourly rate was around 90pence per hour. An utter joke of a wage for a skilled construction worker. So i quit the job.

Didnt cave into having a smoke though despite the depression. I figured why make a bad situation worse, why make myself feel worse. I may not be earning any money but atleast i dont have to buy cigarettes.

A bit of rational thinking killed the craving.

My mom was really chuffed that i have quit smoking. So much so that she's asking me how i did it, what should she do? Hopefully she'll do something about it soon, her breathing is terrible. I think it did me good to be around my mom. I discovered how horrible the taste of cigarette smoke is without having to light up.

Anyhow i'm back in my smokefree home in the country now. The CO filled city is far behind me. I'm off to the smoking cessation clinic in a little while. I'm expecting my CO levels to be up a bit from the 2 i scored last week because of the location/situation ive been in recently.

This site has really helped me so far. I honestly cant thank ALL OF YOU enough, you've helped me save my own life.

I just quit

Todays carbon monoxide reading was 3. I've been assured that everyone has a slight raise today because of the muggy weather. The air just isnt moving so the car polution just sits in the air. Also i've done a few days living with a chain smoker and working in a busy city center.
My blood pressure reading today was 125 systolic 75 diastolic pulse was 81 after a short run up the hill, into the clinic and straight to the blood pressure machine before my appointment.
Last weeks reading was 128 systolic 83 diastolic with a pulse of 69 after driving to the clinic.

I just dont understand blood pressure readings, if anyone would care to explain i'd be most interested.

I just quit

My cessation counsellor was quite happy with my progress. She wouldnt  comment on the blood pressure issue. She is pleased about the way i'm going though, as am I.

Is this normal?

Sfree.

I'm certainly no stronger than yourself. I look at you and think 'that lady has won already'.  Theres a whole train of belief in modern radical Christianity that goes along the lines of 'Christ beat everything for you, all you have to do is accept it'. Whether that meets with your religeous beliefs (or even mine, i'm not too sure on that one) is a different matter. Regardless its a decent analogy of the way i see your situation. You've already won, now you have to live as the victor. You've already got free of nicotine, you've beat the addiction. Now you have to live free of it. Thats the undiscovered country.

Nearly caved in.

Yep went to the shop bought 10 cigarettes, though not my usuall brand. Even bought matches. Even put one in my mouth and took a match out of the box. I dont know how i didnt light it.

Did the person that said 'the first 2 weeks are the hardest' ever smoke? The way i feel now is way worse than during that time. I'm catatonic half the time, i just cant think clearly. I'm usually sharp as a pin. I was out negotiating a price for a party for my wifes 30th earlier, looking blankly at columns of figures i would have tallied in milliseconds. I nearly asked for a pen and paper to do the sum with, very embarassing. My wifes best friend couldnt believe how much i've slowed up in under a month. I'm listless, no appetite, cant make a decision on anything. Generaly feeling like a quarter of the person I was. Nothing is getting rid of the craving, its like a constant feeling of smoke hitting the back of my throat. Endless torment, I'm near suicidal with depression. I even found myself thinking earlier 'if this is a smoke free life i'd rather die young'. Not the most rational thought i know but very indicative of my general state of mind at the moment.

Nearly caved in.

I went and gave the smokes to a friend who's quit a few times before and is helping me through some stuff on a one to one basis. Aint friends great. She pretty much confirmed what Hot Si02 said, "the first couple of weeks are easy cos your excited, you've something to fight against and can get the bit between your teeth".

Well i've got to control this horrible internal conflict somehow. The cravings are equally as strong today, i've just resigned myself to the idea that 'this is it'. I have my appointment at the smoking cessation clinic tomorrow. I think i'll print my cravings diary and discuss it with the nurse. This level of depression cant be a side effect of quitting it must be enhanced by the zyban or something. I'm going to see about quitting that stuff too.

Thanks all, the advice given is heeded.

Jules do you find quitting affects your creativity. I play guitar and piano, prior to quitting i was on a bit of a roll regards composition. (a lot of musicians experience feast or famine with composition). All of a sudden thats out the window and i can hardly string two notes together. Are you or have you experienced similar with painting?

Also please tell me where i can view some of your work, or please post some pictures. A close friend of mine has a for landscapes has had work featured in galleries. Currently he's painting more surreal stuff.

Discriminated for not smoking :-(

Absolutely preposterous. I'd seek legal action and sue em, its not like their short of a few quid. I thought discrimination was the new murder in the eyes of the law. Being segregated and told you are excluded from participation because your a non smoker is definately segregation. Its not like your going into it not knowing that your going to be surrounded by smokers, the choice to participate in that, is entirely yours. You (unlike smokers) have free will after all.

I'd get rich off this one.

My Journey..

Hey Spacecas your going to do this. That weed is not stronger than your mind, and its certainly no stronger than your will. You know where i am should you want to moan gripe and whinge. A good bit of moaning, griping and whinging always makes me feel better, and who better to do it to than a stranger.

Right behind you mate.
Nick
