I am New!

Just thought that I would introduce myself and let you know why I am here. I had smoked for the last 13 years of my life and started at a very young age. I have been wanting to quit for quite some time but never actually put a plan or quit date in place. Yesterday I realized that there will never be a good time to quit and that there is nothing stopping me except for me! I had a hot relaxing bubble bath last night and gave myself a little pep talk about quitting smoking and why I should do it and reminded myself that I can do. There are so many example of people who have quit that it doesn't make my journey any more difficult than for someone else. I am hoping that these friends and family members who are now non smokers will provide me with the support I need. I started the patch this morning and have not had a smoke yet. This is a big accomplishment for me and I hope that realizing these little successes will help my overall success of being a non smoker for the rest of my life. I had read some of the other posts and felt a little more encouraged because of them. I want to Thank everyone that has posted inspirational messages and Ceridian for having this site available as a tool and resource. I wish everyone success on this journey as I am sure we would all be better off as NON-SMOKERS!!!!! I am New!

I just want to Thank everyone for the quick response posts. I can already tell how much this group is going to help me each and every day! My small accomplishment is that I did not smoke yesterday and am starting to repeat N.O.P.E already. I feel that I am at a time in my life that I can really see myself doing this. I am struggling (about every hour or so) as this is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but I just keep telling myself that I am stronger than an addicition. Thanks again for all the invaluable posts and supportive words. I will be checking back everyday as hearing everyone's success, failures, tips and questions is a great help so far! Thanks to everyone, it is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!! I am New!

Day 3-although difficult to get through each day, I am happy. It has been hard over the last 3 days not to cave in to the cravings that make me miserable, but I know there is light at the end of the tunnel. I just imagine it getting easier and knowing that it will not always be like this. I can beat this as I am the one with ultimate control. I've been checking in regularly but have decided not to post to anyone's discussions as I don't feel I am ready to give others advice or support yet. As a side note I have found Allen Carr's books very helpful in addition to all the great info and posts on this site. Have a great day everyone! Day 8!!!!!!

Hi group, it is the start of Day 8 of no smoking for me! I really couldn't be any happier at this point. I just wanted to share my experience as so far it has been a great one. I made the decision to quit last Saturday night while I was sitting around with some friends. The discussion came up and I decieded that there really was never going to be a "good" time to quit and that at least trying to quit was worth it. Monday morning came around and I put a patch on my arm even though it was difficult to not have a smoke first thing in the morning. By lunchtime I was amazed at myself (smoked half a pack for the last 13 yrs-starting at age 13) and knew that I might slip but that I was doing good so far. With each passing hour and then each passing day I felt stronger and more dedicated to this mission. I had tons of cravings some worse then others (never became the flight attendant from that zany commercial--Thank goodness!)but I got through it. My attitude was becoming more positive as I could finally see that it was possible and that it wasn't killing me not to smoke, it was killing me to smoke! I loved checking the site every few hours to see my stats which I everyday I amazed with! This encouraged me to continue the quit. Going onto day 8 today I still find it difficult at times but it has definetely gotten easier. My attitude has changed dramatically---I want to be a non-smoker! I don't want to stink, have to worry about where/when I smoke, spending money on smoking, being an outcast, trekking out in minus 30 degree weather to buy a pack. smoking in my own home and again all the money being given to these tobacco companies to only have in go up in smoke. I never realized how stupid I was for spending so much money on something I don't see any benefits from. I am free! Free from each and every one of those characteristics of smoking. I believe this is what is keeping me going at this point. I know I am smarter and stronger to quit than to keep living with the avoidance of how terrible smoking is. I feel like a whole new person and my outlook is positive. Sorry to ramble on...but if it helps me, I need to do it. Some things that helped me in the last week were: making a list of all the reasons why I don't want to be a smoker. Reading as much as possible on this site (tremendous help by the way) chewing on candy, gum and carrot sticks and lots of water. I talked to as many people as I could and gave my family the heads up so they could encourage me on this journey. Everything else I kept up on my regular routines. One major help has been Allen Carr's Easyway to quit smoking. It really does make you realize that smoking will NOT relax me, make me less bored, help me concentrate or make me a better person in any way! I recommend his books to anyone that needs extra support. It's worth giving a try. Day 8 has also allowed me to reflect upon timing. I am currently studying to get my mutual funds license and I write the exam on Dec. 11th. I thought I picked the worst timing ever but then realized that I had more time to study and that I could focus more attention to it and that if I could get through the first 7 days studying that I could write the exam (and hopefully pass) without needing to smoke! It's never a bad time to quit! Non smokers deal with just as much stress in their lives as smokers, but they deal with it differently and so can we. Smoking will not take the stress away, you have to learn to cope and deal with things without smoking and it can be done. I can do it! You can do it! Thanks to everyone on this site, some of which I hope to add as buddies as you have had some amazing stuff to say. Keep the quit it is totally worth it. It's like a whole new Freedom! Thanks again for letting me express how I've been feeling! New to group -my goodbye to cigs

Great idea on writing a letter to end your relationship. It will be a "Dear John" that you will never regret and that did not come too soon. I am also new to this site and not smoking and have found that this site is amazing and everyone here is absolutely supportive and willing to help in any way! I want to congratulate you on your success and remember that it only gets easier from here. I found Allen Carr's books very helpful. We are similar in age and it helps knowing that there is someone out there that is like me or is going through the same thing. Remember to post, reward and not smoke! Congrats again, and don't worry your habit is not missing you so no point in missing it. Off to buy some new shoes/boots with the money I saved already! Keep me posted! Day 8!!!!!!

As per Alohakeia's suggestion, I have now changed my screen name to Freedom26. I am 26 and feel that I have found the freedom from smoking, therefore have changed it to reflect a new attitude and outlook. Thanks again to all the posters out there, your support has been overwhelming. This has also encouraged me to post more often and hopefully provide support to others! Thanks again, I couldn't have done it without you! Who knew?

I'm using the patch and it seems to be working quite well. Don't create more anxiety than you need to about your quit date coming up soon. Start looking forward to it as it will totally transform your life. You know you can succeed, so don't set yourself up for failure by being afraid. It will be difficult but in the end one of the best decisions you will ever make in your life. I was a little nervous to quit at first too as I hadn't even attempted too many times before, but I knew one of the secrets was to see it as a positive thing. Remaining positive was difficult but it helped and I can see the immediate benefits from being positive and quitting smoking. I haven't quit for that long but I really do feel like a whole new person with a new attitude towards smoking, and I think once your quit date rolls up and you see how powerful and in control you can be over this "little monster"--nicotine that you too will be able to do it. This site is great for motivation and support so stay on here and read and post as much as possible. You may want to check out some of Allen Carr's books, I believe this is what really gave me such a good attitude about quitting. Don't stress, You'll do great! Believe in yourself! keep us all posted, there are many wonderful people here to help you. Okay this is the deal

I actually joined Weight Watchers before quitting smoking and purchased a treadmill. If funds are low, you can try and get a book from any previous WW member, and walking outside is free. I recommend it because it worked for me and there were no strings attached. Great program in addition to regular exercise and I have seen this work for numerous other people. You should have some energy now that you are not filling your lungs with cancerous toxins, so try a new or different exercise or sport to get back into the swing of things.
